Johnson & Wales Storms Back To Defeat Women's Hockey

PAWTUCKET, R.I.—Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) scored four of the final five goals, to earn a 4-3 win over UMass Boston women's hockey on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UMass Boston jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first period, but the Wildcats stormed back to score three-straight before the first intermission. After UMass Boston tied the game late in the second, Koryn Russell completed her hat trick 3:59 into the third period, to give the Wildcats a win in their conference opener. 

Beacons senior captain Erica Lunn (Kingston, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season and added an assist. Junior Kelsey Ryan (Burlington, Mass.) and freshman Hannah MacDougall (South Dartmouth, Mass.) each added their second goals of the season. 

Junior Cassidy Sullivan (Dedham, Mass.) and freshman defenseman Addie Budington (Winnetka, Ill.) each recorded their first collegiate assists in the loss. 

In net, senior Caty Flagg (Methuen, Mass.) made 14 saves on 18 shots. 

Russell recorded a pair of goals in the first period and added her first collegiate game winner in the third. 

Hannah Tracy tacked on a goal and an assist in the victory. 

In net, Jasmine Mucci made 33 saves on 36 shots to improve to 2-0-1 on the season. 

UMass Boston opened the scoring just 13 seconds into the game. Lunn won the face-off and dished it off to Sullivan who found MacDougall for a quick snipe. 

The Beacons doubled their lead at 11:37. With the Beacons on the power-play for the first time, Budington and Jane Ann Drill (Milwaukee, Wisc.) passed the puck around the outside of the Wildcats defense, before finding Lunn in the circle for a high wrist shot. 

Johnson & Wales immediately turned the momentum, with three goals in a 5:03 span. 

Russell cut the deficit to 2-1 at 14:03 and Tracy tied the game at 2-2 at 15:13. 

The Wildcats took the lead for the first time at 19:06, when Russell scored her third goal in as many games. 

UMass Boston evened the game at 19:40 of the second. Ryan came up with a turnover in neutral ice and beat Mucci for a shorthanded goal with 20 seconds left in the period. 

Russell completed her hat trick at 3:59 of the third, when she took a pass from Cassie Wakefield and beat Flagg. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • UMass Boston doubled up the Wildcats in shots (36-18), but the Wildcats held a 36-11 edge in face-offs. 
  • The Beacons went 1-4 on the power-play and held Johnson & Wales to an 0-4 mark. 
  • Lunn recorded a multiple-point game for the fourth time in her career. Three of her multiple point games have come against teams from Rhode Island (twice against Salve Regina University). 
  • Johnson & Wales has now won four-straight over the Beacons since December 2017. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 4-1. 
  • UMass Boston is now 16-16 this season on penalty kills.

UMass Boston will travel to the University of Southern Maine on Friday night at 4 p.m. for a New England Hockey Conference contest.
