Women's Hockey Snaps Losing Skid With 4-1 Win Over Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H.—UMass Boston scored two goals in the first and third periods, to earn their first New England Hockey Conference win of the season on Friday night at Hanaway Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior goalie Caty Flagg (Metheun, Mass.) recorded a season-high 39 saves and four different Beacons scored, to help UMass Boston snap a four-game losing streak. 

Flagg made 15 saves in the first period, 14 more in the second and 10 in the third, to earn her second win of the season. 

Katie Leffler (Key Largo, Fla.) paced the Beacons with a goal and an assist. She also finished 6-7 in face-offs. 

Kelsey Ryan (Burlington, Mass.) Anna Kehoe (Hingham, Mass.) and Bri Colucci (Lancaster, N.Y.) also added goals in the victory. 

Plymouth State's Becca Bridge made 28 saves on 31 shots, to fall to 2-4 on the season. 

Zoë Killisch scored the lone goal for the hosts, who fell to 0-3 this season at home. 

UMass Boston opened the scoring 6:08 into the first period. The Beacons top line of Ryan, Leffler and Jenessa Hernandez (Chicago, Ill.) combined for the goal, with Ryan tying the team lead with her third goal of the year. 

Kehoe scored the game-winning goal 4:20 later, when she took a pass from Mia Sacco (Plymouth, Mass.) off a face-off win and beat Bridge for her second career goal. 

The Panthers dominated the second period and were able to cut the deficit to 2-1. Plymouth outshot the Beacons 15-6 and finally snuck one past Flagg with 3:54 left in the period. Killisch took a pass from Kassidy Lyons and scored to make it 2-1. 

UMass Boston earned the win thanks to one of their best periods of the season. After being outshot 30-16 through the first two periods, the Beacons outshot the Panthers 16-10 in the third and scored the only two goals of the period. 

Colucci scored a key insurance goal 7:25 into the period, when she blasted a power-play goal from the point pass Bridge, just nine seconds into the man-advantage. 

Leffler put the game away in the final minute, when she took a pass from Flagg and potted an empty-net goal with 34 seconds to play. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Plymouth State outshot the Beacons 40-32 and held a slim 32-29 edge in face-offs. 
  • With the win, UMass Boston snaps a four-game winless streak (0-2-2) against the Panthers. The Beacons lead the all-time series 9-6-2. 
  • Leffler, who finished tied for second on the Beacons in goals last season, recorded her first goal of the season in the contest. 
  • The Beacons four goals are their most goals scored in a game this season. UMass Boston has not scored four goals since January 18, 2019, when they earned a 4-0 win over host New England College. 
  • UMass Boston went 1-2 on the power-play, while the Panthers finished 0-2.
