REISTERSTOWN, Md. – Despite a 28-20 advantage in shots women's hockey had to settle for a 0-0 non-conference draw with Stevenson University as they began their 2019-20 season Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons dominated the shots category in the first period 8-1, but failed to get the puck past Stevenson netminder, Annika Carlander.

In the second frame, the Beacons continued to pressure the Mustangs defense, just like the first they were unable to put that crucial dent on the scoreboard.  The second period also saw the Mustangs offense gain some energy as they pressured senior goalie Caty Flagg (Methuen, Mass.) with seven shots of-their-own.

The third stanza was another back-and-forth period, with the Beacons holding a +2 advantage (10-8) in shots.  Still deadlocked at 0-0, the two teams headed for the first overtime of the new season.

Stevenson held all the chances in the shot five minute period, but were denied on all four attempts by Flagg, as she preserved the shutout and the draw.

BY THE NUMBERS

• On the night Flagg registered 20 saves, while Carlander made 28 stops for Stevenson
• Both teams finished 0-for-6 on the power-play
• All-time the Beacons are now 4-1-2 against Stevenson University
• Friday's tie was the second in the last three meetings with the Mustangs and extended the Beacons unbeaten streak to four-straight (2-0-2)
• Friday's result marked the first time in program history that the Beacons opened a new season with a tie, while also earning a shutout
