HOW IT HAPPENED
Roberts opened the scoring at 16:18 and sent a cross through the box that found a wide-open Kessy Alves at 51:50 to stun the hosts.
Despite earning the edge in shots, shots on goals and corner kicks, UMass Boston was consistently frustrated throughout the night in a physical battle.
The two teams combined for 27 fouls and five yellow cards, with Bridgewater State picking up three cards.
The Beacons used two of their backup goalies, with Sandro van Kuijck (Nunspeet, Netherlands) taking the loss after allowing one goal on two shots. Aidan Carter (Weymouth, Mass.) made two saves on three shots in the second half.
Bridgewater State goalie Nate Morgardo stopped all six shots he faced to improve to 2-6 on the season.
UMass Boston created some of their best chances early on, with junior Guilherme Barbosa (Saugus, Mass.) sending a pair of promising shots just wide. Ten minutes later, UMass Boston had three chances from within 25-yards blocked by Bears defenders, with two good looks from within the 18-yard box.
The Bears turned the tides less than 30-seconds later. Filipe Gomes unlocked the Beacons defense on the counterattack and his through ball found Roberts alone behind the defense. Roberts raced on to the ball and beat an onrushing Van Kuijck through the five-hole for a 1-0 lead.
UMass Boston nearly tied the game at the 40-minute mark. Raffi DeSouza (Watertown, Mass.) was left wide-open at the top of the six and had the ball bounce towards him, but his shot was deflected wide but a diving Bears defender.
The Bears doubled their lead and stunned the Beacons at 51:50. Roberts dribbled past the defense and sent a low cross through the goal box. The ball slipped past a defender and Carter to find a wide-open Alves at the near post, who easily tapped it in.
UMass Boston would continue to pressure Morgado and the Bears defense but they failed to find the back of the net.
