HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ravens outscored UMass Boston 3-1 in the second period and held off a Beacons' late charge to earn the 3-2 win.
UMass Boston senior defenseman Kat Armstrong (Kingston, Ont.) made the most of her 100th collegiate appearance. The senior scored her first goal of the season, and tacked on the primary assist on the Beacons' second goal.
Freshman Julia Nolan (Duxbury, Mass.) redirected Armstrong's shot for the second goal, while Kristen Embrey (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Arielle Gallucci (Warren, N.J.) each picked up assists in the loss.
In net, Rachel Myette (Duxbury, Mass.) kept the Beacons in the game all night long, by making 31 saves.
Lanie Matsumoto, Michelle Holmes and Alysha Raimo all scored for the visitors, who won despite having their top scorer Alex Brolsma.
Senior Shannon O'Neill improved to 11-4-1 by making 27 saves on 29 shots.
UMass Boston scored the lone goal of the first period at 8:59. Embrey left a drop pass for Armstrong, who teed up a massive slapshot. The slapshot hit the crossbar and then went off the back of O'Neill's cage, before eventually trickling across the goal line for a 1-0 Beacons lead.
Matsumoto tied the game 37 seconds into the second with a power-play goal. Marisa Ketterman and Michelle Holmes drew the Beacons defense with passes and then found Matsumoto all alone on the back door for a 1-1 tie.
Armstrong and the Beacons took the lead right back at 3:19. Gallucci found Armstrong at the blue line and Nolan tipped down her rocket of a shot just inside the far post for a 2-1 lead.
Holmes tied the game up at 4:55 on a 3-on-1. After a sloppy Beacons' turnover, Holmes went glove side to tie the game at 2-2. Meg Gilbride and Kelsey Holmes earned assists on the play.
Franklin Pierce broke the deadlock just under 10 minutes later, when Raimo scored the game-winner at 14:36. After the Beacons failed to clear their zone on two occasions, Raimo was left all alone in front and beat Myette through the five-hole for a 3-2 edge. Ketterman and Flynn each picked up helpers on the play.
UMass Boston picked up their play in the third and earned a 5-on-3, two-minute power play eight minutes into the period. The Beacons had several great chances to tie the game, but O'Neill stood up to the task on all 10 shots she faced in the period.
