HOW IT HAPPENED
After a first period, which was dominated mostly by the Beacons offense, the Polar Bears took over in the final 40 minutes of play to capture their second tournament crown. UMass Boston went into the first break after freshman Grace Fisher (Vienna, Va.) got the Beacons on the board with her first collegiate goal.
The two teams were evenly matched in the opening frame, with the home crowd fueling the Beacons. Unfortunately, in the second period, Polar Bears came roaring back and dominated the period from start to finish. They got on the board at the 9:43 mark with a goal by Julie Dachille. Their second came less than a minute later with Fichter finding the back of the net to make it 2-1.
When given the chance, the Beacons did score the equalizer with less than four minutes to play. The first-ever recipient of the Katherine Wall '08 Award, Kristen Embrey (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) netted the then equalizer off of a pass from Rachel Peacock (Billerica, Mass.).
Even at 2-2, the Beacons were ready for the third, and potentially their second championship in program history. However, the Polar Bears did not slow up their assault over the final 20 minutes and netted two more goals to clinch the victory.
For the Beacons Rachel Myette (Duxbury, Mass.) made 42 stops in the loss, while Bowdoin's Sophia Lattanzio posted 21 stops to improve to 3-0-1 on the year.
