Saint Anselm College Overpowers #10 Women's Hockey 4-0

MANCHESTER, N.H.—Despite a season-high 38 saves from junior Rachel Myette (Duxbury, Mass.), #10 UMass Boston women's hockey couldn't keep up with host St. Anselm College in a 4-0 loss on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

St. Anselm College used a three-goal outburst in a dominant second period, to hand UMass Boston their first loss of the 2016-17 season.

Sara McNamara, Kaitlyn Spillane and Alex Starzyk all scored within a 10-minute span for the Hawks in the second period. As a team, the hosts outshot UMass Boston 20-2 in the second stanza.

Alison Quinn added one final tally five minutes into the third for St. Anselm College.

Myette made at least nine saves in all three periods, including 17 in the second stanza.

Saint Anselm College senior Hannah Synnott stopped all 15 shots she faced to earn her 10th shutout in the past two seasons.

The Hawks come out flying in the first period, with Myette forced to make seven saves in the first 11 minutes. UMass Boston turned the tide late with a couple of power-plays and headed into the break even on the scoreboard (0-0) and shots (9-9).

Saint Anselm broke the scoreless deadlock thanks to a power-play opportunity 1:30 into the second period. Myette stopped the first five shots she faced and got some help from the crossbar, before McNamara scored with less than four seconds left on the man advantage.

Just over four minutes later Spillane doubled the lead at 7:44 off an assist from Alison Butler.

The Hawks continued to keep the Beacons on the back foot thanks to another power play and nearly made it 3-0, when Spillane caught the post. Starzyk put the game out of reach moments later on Butler's second assist of the game.

While the third period was much more even, St. Anselm outshot the Beacons 13-4 and earned a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • St. Anselm earned a 42-15 edge in shots and a 32-23 advantage in the face-off dot.
  • The Beacons finished 0-for-5 on the man advantage, while St. Anselm went 1-for-5.
  • Junior Jane Morrisette (Pembroke, Mass.) led the Beacons with four shots and a 14-for-26 performance in face-offs.
  • With the win, the Hawks improved to 16-4-1 against the Beacons. The win snapped the Beacons' three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) against Saint Anselm College.

WHO'S NEXT 

UMass Boston will host the University of Southern Maine on Saturday at 1 p.m. in their home opener. Prior to the contest, the Beacons will honor their 2015-16 NEHC Championship Team and have a ceremonial puck drop.
