Nolan's First Collegiate Goal Lifts Women's Hockey Past New England College

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.—Junior Jane Morrisette (Pembroke, Mass.) and freshman Julia Nolan (Duxbury, Mass.) each scored within a 1:17 span of the third period, to lift #9/11 UMass Boston women's hockey past New England College Friday night.

THE BASICS

#9/11 UMass Boston 2, New England College 1

(UMass Boston 4-1, NEHC 2-1)

(New England College 1-3, NEHC 1-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After the two teams played to a scoreless draw for the opening 50 minutes plus, Nolan's first collegiate goal marked the final marker in a three-goal flurry over 77 seconds.

Morrisette gave the Beacons a brief lead at 11:20 with a shorthanded goal, only to have New England College's Marisa Roth score a power-play tally at 11:50 to even the score.

With the teams back to even-strength, Nolan won back-to-back face-offs, before potting his first collegiate goal at 12:37. Defensemen Arielle Gallucci (Warren, N.J.) and Kat Armstrong (Kingston, Ont.) both picked up assists on the goal.

Junior netminder Rachel Myette (Duxbury, Mass.) moved to 3-1 on the season by stopping 18 of 19 shots. The junior made nine saves in the first period and stopped the first 18 shots she faced on the evening.

New England College goalie Ashley Castriotta stopped 33 of 35 shots to fall to 1-3 on the year. The junior netminder made double-digit saves in all three periods, including stopping all 13 shots she faced in the second stanza.

Neither side could generate a goal throughout the first two periods. In the first period, the teams were very even; with UMass Boston outshooting the Pilgrims 10-9, despite being called for all three penalties in the stanza.

The Beacons dominated the second period, outshooting New England College 13-1, but still couldn't sneak one past Castriotta.

Third-period play appeared to be following a similar trend, with both goalies making huge saves to keep the game scoreless.

With the Pilgrims on the power-play, Armstrong stole the puck away and fed Morrisette for a breakaway, which the junior buried past Castriotta.

New England College answered right back though, as Roth tied the game at 1-1 exactly 30 seconds after the Morrisette goal.

Nolan closed out the scoring run at 12:37 with her first collegiate goal. The freshman took passes from Gallucci and Armstrong and toedragged past a defender towards the net, before sneaking a shot just inside the near post for a 2-1 advantage.

UMass Boston kept the pressure on the Pilgrims from there, with the next five shots coming off the sticks of Beacons.

New England College did get three late looks, but all three shots were knocked down by Beacons' defensemen, before they could reach Myette.
