HOW IT HAPPENED
Herr and the Bantams scored three goals in the opening 21:35, to help Trinity win the 9th Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament. The win marked the Bantams fourth win against the Beacons in the Title Game, after downing UMass Boston in the 2008, 2010 and 2011 finals.
UMass Boston needed the full 60 minutes to get on the board, as senior captain Alexandra Karlis (Denver, Colo.) scored an extra-attacker goal with 19 seconds to play in regulation. The goal marked her second of the weekend, with linemate Jenny Currie (Chelmsford, Mass.) and fellow captain Alexa Cappione (Massena, N.Y.) picking up assists on the play.
In net, Rachel Myette (Pembroke, Mass.) overcame a slow start to post 28 saves on 31 shots, including several huge saves to close out the second period.
Junior Kristen Embrey (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and sophomore Maren Brown (Brainerd, Minn.) were named to the All-Tournament for UMass Boston.
Melissa Maffeo and Emma Tani recorded the Bantams first two goals of the game, as the Bantams improved to 4-1-0 in non-conference play.
Tani (two goals and one assist on the weekend) joined Herr and sophomore goalie Sydney Belinskas on the All-Tournament Team. Belinskas stopped 25 of 26 shots against the Beacons, after posting 21 saves on 22 shots against Endicott College on Monday.
It took Trinity just three minutes and 41 seconds to grab a lead, as Maffeo scored off a feed in front from Herr and Tani.
Tani made it 2-0 at the 14:10 mark, as Herr forced a Beacons' turnover in their own zone and left a perfect pass for Tani, who put it past a sprawled out Myette.
Herr added a third Trinity goal 1:35 into the second period, as the senior skated out from behind the goal and snuck in a shot short-side. Kelcie Finn picked up an assist on the play.
UMass Boston began to pick up their play late in the second and actually controlled the third period, but couldn't find a way past Belinskas until the final minute of play.
With the goalie pulled and Trinity pinned in their own end, the Beacons put a flurry of shots on goal. Karlis came away with the puck near the far post and appeared to hit the post, before collecting the rebound and sliding it past Belinskas.
