BOSTON, Mass. – Three different players found the back of the net, and sophomore netminder Rachel Myette (Pembroke, Mass.) posted 18 saves to lead women's hockey to a 3-1 win over SUNY Canton in the first round of the 9th Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament Monday afternoon in the Beacons Ice Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite outshooting the Roos a lopsided 22-3 in the first 20 minutes of play, the Beacons were held to just the one goal. However they erupted for back-to-back goals in less than a minute in the opening two minutes of the second period to secure the victory.
With the win UMass advances to the championship game of their annual tournament, and will face the winner of Endicott College/Trinity College (Conn.) tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Beacons Ice Arena.
Senior Alexandra Karlis (Denver, Colo.) got UMass on the board in the first period, as the forward snuck the puck in at the 9:22 mark. Junior defensemen Kat Armstrong (Boulder, Colo.) and Kristen Embrey (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) both assisted on the play.
After the first intermission, Jenny Currie (Chelmsford, Mass.) made it a 2-0 game just 16 seconds into the new period. Embrey would assist on the play, and was joined by Samantha Fallon (Pembroke, Mass.). Seconds later, the Beacons got their third and final marker from Maren Brown (Brainerd, Minn.) on an unassisted play.
The Beacons would continue to dominate offensively as they outshot the Roos 13-4 in the 2nd, and 25-7 through the first two frames.
The third period saw a change in momentum as the Roos tried to battle back throughout the final 20 minutes. They would go on to lead the period in shots 11-10, and would get their only goal of the day with 1:50 left in the contest. Canton's leading scorer in Tess Adams netted the power-play goal to end the Beacons shutout bid.
