#9/10 Norwich Sneaks Past Women's Hockey

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – A lone goal by Norwich University's Sarah Schwenzfeier proved to be the only marker of the afternoon as the Cadets snuck past women's hockey by the final of 1-0 Saturday afternoon in a New England Hockey Conference game at the Beacons Ice Arena in front of a program record 811 fans.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 0, #9/10 Norwich University 1

UMass Boston (10-10-0, 8-4-1 NEHC)
Norwich University (13-6-0, 11-1-0 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Schwenzfeier's lone goal came off of a rebound as the forward snuck the puck past Beacons goaltender Rachel Myette.  Rachel Bellio took the initial shot which, Myette pushed wide.  Schwenzfeier would collect the loose puck and would jam it past Myette on the near post to give the Cadets the one goal lead at the 12:45 mark of the first period.

The Beacons would nearly score the equalizer on their only power-play attempt also in the first period.  Kaleigh Beauregard ripped a one-time from right in front of the blue line.  Norwich goaltender Celeste Robert never the saw the puck as it clanged off of the inside corner of the post.  Unfortunately, the Beacons did not get the lucky deflection as the puck came flying back out to a Beacons player.

Through the final two periods the two squads exchanged shots with neither finding the back of the net.  Myette helped to carry a depleted Beacons defense as she combined for 40 saves in the contest.  Robert made 24 saves to earn her seventh win of the season.

As part of Saturday's contest, UMass Boston paid tribute to Katherine Wall '08 and her entire family as part of the "Pink The Rink" initiative.  Wall, who was a three sport athlete at UMass Boston, passed away from breast cancer last fall, after defeating it twice, she was 29.  The Beacons wore custom pink jerseys, which they then auctioned off with all the proceeds going to the Katherine Wall Fund.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Norwich University has now won nine straight over the Beacons dating back March 6, 2010
