Women's Hockey Prepares For 9th Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament

BOSTON, Mass. – The UMass Boston women's hockey team is set to begin the second half of their 2015-16 season, as they host the ninth annual Codfish Bowl Tournament in the Beacons Ice Arena.  The tournament will be played on January 4 and 5, and will feature Trinity College (Conn.), Endicott College, and SUNY Canton.

Last season, Stevenson University earned their first-ever tournament title, following a 3-2 overtime win over the Beacons.

All four games in this year's tournament will have live stats and video with play-by-play available for the two UMass Boston games.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY

Now in its 9th edition, the Codfish Bowl tournament has become one of the top Division III women's tournaments in New England.  UMass Boston is looking to claim their second tournament crown since the tournament's inception. 

Trinity College, who appeared in the first-ever Codfish Bowl back in 2008, holds the tournament record for most titles won with four, and enter this year's tournament with a perfect 8-0 record.  Endicott College, will be making their first-ever appearance in the Codfish, while SUNY Canton enters the Beacons Ice Arena for their second Codfish Bowl.  Last season, Canton dropped both of their games first falling to UMass Boston, then to Chatham University in the consolation game.

UMass Boston

The Beacons led by interim head coach Lindsay Berman have played some consistent hockey this season, despite having just 19 players on the roster.  The Beacons head into their annual Codfish looking to avenge last year's championship game loss to Stevenson, after winning their first title in 2014.  The Beacons enter this year's tournament led by Kaleigh Beauregard and Lizzie Aveson, who both have seven points.  Beauregard leads the Beacons with five goals, while Kat Armstrong stands as the team's top playmaker with four assists.  Between the pipes Rachel Myette has combined for 149 saves and enter this year's tournament with a 4-2-0 record, and has a save percentage of .920.

SUNY Canton

Location: Canton, N.Y.
Conference: Colonial Hockey Conference
Head Coach: Dave LaBaff (2nd season)

Overall Record: 4-7-1
Conference Record: 4-1-1

For the Roos of SUNY Canton they will look to Tess Adams to continue her standout play.  The freshman forward has combined for 10 goals and eight assists this season, which leads the team in both categories.  She owns four power-play goals and has one of the team's four game-winners.  Anna Lagzdina has also had a strong season posting five goals and five assists.  Illie Berisha has seen a majority of the minutes in goal, and has combined for 210 saves and has one of the team's two shutouts along with Rebecca DiNardo.

Endicott College

Location: Beverly, Mass.

In just their first season as a collegiate program, Endicott College has made some serious waves in Division III women's hockey.  Lexi Klein leads the team going into this year's tournament with five points (2g, 3a).  Maggie Layo and Dynnea Bezona each lead the team with three goals a-piece.  Vendela Jonsson has totaled 137 saves and has an impressive .951 save percentage and 0.86 goals against average in her freshman campaign.  She also sits with a strong 4-2-2 record, while Carrera Noelscher is just as impressive with her .50 goals against average and .929 save percentage.

Trinity College (Conn.)

Location: Hartford, Conn.

Trinity College makes their first appearance in the Codfish Bowl since the 2011 season, when they won their fourth straight title.  The only team with an undefeated record in the tournament, the Bantams will look for their fifth crown this week.  The Bantams will look to Shannon Farrell to lead the way as she is currently averaging a goal per game, and leads the team with 10 points (7g, 3a).  Sydney Belinskas has played every minute for Trinity and boasts 177 saves, a .912 save percentage, and a 2.45 goals against average.
