Women's Hockey Pounds Manhattanville For Conference Win

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – In the most one-sided victory for women's hockey over conference rival Manhattanville College, five different players found the back of the net and senior Alexandra Karlis (Denver, Colo.) had a career-best three points (1g, 2a) to lead the Beacons to a 5-0 New England Hockey Conference win Friday afternoon in the Beacons Ice Arena.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 5, Manhattanville College 2

UMass Boston (10-9-0, 8-3-0 NEHC)
Manhattanville College (6-12-0, 4-7-0 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons got on the board early in the first period, as senior captain Alexa Cappione (Massena, N.Y.) fired home one-time from right in front of the blue line.  The senior connected on a perfectly placed pass from Alli Bianchini (Detroit, Mich.), who found her teammate wide open in front of the Valiants bench.

Karlis then made it a two score affair less than two minutes later as she crushed the puck to the top corner.  The shot hit the steal and deflected past Manhattanville's Rose Pijaca.  The Beacons would lead the period in shots 14-10 as they headed into the locker room for the first intermission.

After the break, the two teams battled back-and-forth, but it was the Beacons who controlled a majority of the momentum.  They would outshoot their conference rivals 15-5 in the second frame.  With time winding down quickly, the Beacons got their third goal of the contest from Kayla Smith (Woburn, Mass.) with 40 ticks left on the scoreboard.  The junior forward would score on her own rebound, with Kristen Embrey (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Karlis both getting credited with an assist.

Now with the game firmly in their grasp, the Beacons did not let off the gas in the third as they continued to pound Pijaca and the Valiants defense.  Embrey would get in on the scoring action at the 8:47 mark off of a pass from Karlis, while senior Jenny Currie (Chelmsford, Mass.) put the final nail in the Valiants coffin at the 11:37 mark.  Currie and Cappione pulled off a perfect 2-on-1 and beat Pijaca glove side.

Between the pipes Rachel Myette (Pembroke, Mass.) notched her second career shutout, as the sophomore registered 23 stops.  Pijaca made 43 saves in the loss, her fourth, as the Beacons combined for 48 total shots on goal.
