HOW IT HAPPENED
DaSilva broke open the scoreless tie at 106:48, after both team's defenses did just enough to keep the game scoreless through regulation and the first overtime.
The play started when sophomore Joshua Khang (Brockton, Mass.) deked a defender at midfield and dribbled into space down the center of the field. He slid a pass into a dangerous area for senior Elton Teixeira (Fogo, Cape Verde) who settled the ball with his first touch, before sending a left-footed through-ball into the box for DaSilva. DaSilva rushed in front of his defender and sent a low right-footed shot just inside the far post, as the Bridgewater State keeper rushed towards him. Teixeira and Kang were each credited with assists on the play.
With the win Wednesday, UMass Boston snapped a three-game losing streak against the Bears. Bridgewater State had been one of two teams to have defeated the Beacons in each of head coach Jake Beverlin's first two seasons. The Beacons last win against Bridgewater State came in 1994, as the two teams took an 18-year hiatus, before reviving the rivalry in 2012.
Senior goalie Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) tied the program-record for career victories with his 26th win in 41 career starts. The senior goalie matched Paul Maniscalco ('07) who finished his career 26-22-4. Rosales made five saves in the victory.
Bridgewater State junior goalie Colin Jepsen made seven saves in the loss.
Freshman Mohamed Kenawy (Revere, Mass.) had the best chance for either team in the first half, when he chipped a shot over the goalie towards an open net, only to connect square onto the crossbar just before the break.
Bridgewater State's best two chances of the game came in overtime. Filipe Gomes who was bothered all night by the Beacons' trio of center backs, sent a shot from distance that Rosales had to pump over the bar in the 96th minute. The senior goalie came up even bigger in the 103rd, when he used a full-extension diving effort to tip wide a strong shot from Bridgewater State's leading scorer Conor Murtaugh.
