UMass Boston Women's Basketball Clinches Best Finish In Program History With Senior Day Win

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.—UMass Boston women's basketball (17-8, 9-5 Little East) wrapped up their best regular season in program history with a bow, as the Beacons wrapped up the third seed in the upcoming Little East Conference Tournament with a 64-48 win over Western Connecticut State (16-9, 6-8 Little East) on Senior Day at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

The Beacons, who had never finished higher than fourth in the LEC in program history, will host the sixth-seeded Colonials on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Tuesday's contest will mark the second LEC home playoff game in program history and the first since the 06-07 season.

UMass Boston's 17 overall wins and nine conference victories both marked new program records. With today's win, the Beacons senior class of Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.) and Brittany Moore (Billerica, Mass.) went over .500 for for the first time in their careers. The pair are now 52-51 over their four years, after going 8-18 as freshman.

Morrison played a key part in the victory, as the senior center poured in a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds to help UMass Boston earn their first-ever season-sweep of Western Connecticut State.

Freshman Grace Geary (Falmouth, Mass.) added 14 points and a team-high five assists, while junior Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points and 10 rebounds for her 15th double-double in 25 contests.

Sophomores Taje Burston (Springfield, Mass.) and Mallory Nelson (Topsham, Maine) combined for 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists to help UMass Boston improve to 10-3 at the Clark Athletic Center this season.

Emily Dobson led Western Connecticut State with 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting, as the Colonials suffered through their second-straight game without leading scorer Caroline Brasa.

Kaitlyn Labonte was the only other Colonial to reach double-figures, as she finished with 10 points and four steals off the bench.

Sophomore point guard Colleen Cosker chipped in with five points and a game-high six assists for Western, who had a two-game losing streak to wrap up the regular-season.

UMass Boston shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the field and 60 percent (3-of-5) from distance, while holding the visitors to a 40.4 percent (19-of-47) clip on field goals and a 3-of-8 mark (37.5 percent) on threes.

The Beacons absolutely dominated on the glass, as they earned a 41-22 advantage and a 38-14 edge in points in the paint.

While there were eight lead changes in the contest, Western Connecticut State never was able to gain control, as their largest lead of the game was just one point.

After an even opening seven minutes, UMass Boston took control of the game with a 10-4 run. Murphy hit a layup to give the Beacons a 10-9 lead and from there Geary drained a 3-pointer and Katrina Edwards (Springfield, Mass.), Nelson and Morrison followed with made baskets to push the lead to 20-13.

Western would cut the deficit to 21-18 with 4:56 left, but UMass Boston closed the half on an 11-5 run, to take a 32-23 lead into the break.

The Beacons would blow the game open in the first 4:39 of the second half, as they scored 10 of their first 13 points to take their largest lead of the game at 42-26 with 15:21 to play.

The visitors managed to cut the deficit to single-digits on four occasions, but the Beacons answered back each time, as they cruised to a 16-point win (64-48).
