Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Five different players registered goals as the visiting Crusaders of the College of Holy Cross shutout women's ice hockey by the final of 5-0 Friday afternoon in the Beacons Ice Arena in an ECAC East contest.
With Friday's loss, the Beacons overall record fell to 9-10-4, 6-7-3 in the ECAC East. For the Crusaders they improved to 13-6-3, 9-3-2 in the conference.
In the only meeting between the two teams, the Crusaders controlled play from the opening face-off. With the exception of the first period, in which the Beacons outshot their conference rival 10-9, the Crusaders dominated the offensive ice as they outshot UMass 21-9 over the final 40 minutes.
Alexandra Stevenson anchored the Crusaders defense with her 19 saves to record her fifth shutout of the year, and 11th of her career.
The Crusaders got on the scoreboard less than four minutes into the contest when Francesca Panarelli fired home her fifth goal of the 2014-15 season. Twenty-nine seconds later, Nichol Giannino made it two-goal affair off of a Meaghan Sullivan assist.
After the intermission, Holy Cross scored another early marker, as Madison Schneider made 3-0 at the 4:06 mark, on an unassisted play. The Beacons defense would hold strong for the next nine minutes. Kate Reilly netted her fifth of the season to make it 4-0 Holy Cross with less than seven minutes to play in the second frame.
UMass tried to build some momentum late in the period, but they could not get on the same page, as they went into the second break trailing by four.
The final goal of the day by the Crusaders, was once again the opening minutes, as Erin Hall fired home a slap shot from the point. Panarelli and Mackenzie Boardman were each credited with the assist in what was the final score of the afternoon.
Senior Kailyn Burke (Franklin, Mass.) finished with 25 stops, as the Beacons were shutout for the second straight game.
On the night UMass was 0-for-3 on the power-play, while the Crusaders went 0-for-2.
Suzanne Meek (South Hackensack, N.J.), Alyssa Sullivan (Medford, Mass.), and Alexandra Karlis (Parker, Colo.) each finished with a team-high three shots on goal.
Women's Hockey returns to the Beacons Ice Arena next Friday when they host Franklin Pierce University at 4 p.m.
