Agenor Carries Men's Basketball to 79-75 Win over UMass Dartmouth

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Led by Karl Agenor's (Dorchester, Mass.) double-double of 18 points and 19 rebounds, men's basketball stunned intra-state rival UMass Dartmouth as the Beacons earned a 79-75 Little East Conference win Wednesday evening in the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

The Beacons go-to forward capped-off one of his best nights, 5-for-7 from the field and 8-for-10 at the charity stripe.  On the glass Agenor grabbed 14 defensive and five offensive rebounds, to lead UMass Boston in the paint.

With the victory, UMass earned their first win over the Corsairs on their home floor since the 2005-06 season.  It also ended a three-game skid for UMB as the Beacons improved to 11-11 overall, 3-8 in the conference.  The Corsairs dropped to 12-10, 8-3 in the Little East, with only three games remaining in the regular season.

Alongside Agenor, was senior guard Luc Ulysse (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who matched his teammate with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor, 6-of-9 from the line.

For the Corsairs, John Genkos was red-hot all evening, especially from 3-point land as the guard finished with a game-high 24 points, as he went an impressive 7-for-11 from behind the arc to cap off a 8-for-13 night.  Jordan Rezendes, who currently leads the Little East in scoring, dropped in 22 points, as he went 7-for-16, 3-for-8 from behind the arc.

After a back-and-forth first half, the second started off with the Corsairs taking an early, but very slim lead.  The two squads battled for control tying the scoring a combined four times in the first three minutes and three seconds.

UMass Dartmouth went on their biggest run of the half when then pushed their lead to seven (53-46) with 10:42 to go in regulation.  The Beacons would battle back and cut the deficit to three on a jumper from Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.), who had 16 points in the win.

Genkos would then drain his first of two straight 3-pointers to keep the Corsairs lead intact.

With time continuing to wind down, UMass Dartmouth managed to hold off one last run by the Beacons with 6:44 left to play, but they could not maintain that momentum.  Still down by seven, the Beacons got a huge spark when they went 8-0 run to make it 64-63 UMB with 4:41 left in regulation.

A 2-for-2 showing at the line by Ulysse, pushed UMB ahead of their rival for the third time in the second half, and the first since the 17:12 mark.

Rezendes then drained a lay-up to give UMD back control of the scoreboard once again.  However UMass Boston's offense fired off another big run, scoring three straight baskets, two from Agenor and one from Joseph, to make it 70-65 with 3:08 to play.

The Beacons would maintain their hold on the lead, and actually managed to push it to a game-high seven points, following a Gregory Young (Dorchester, Mass.) free throw with 48 seconds left in the contest.

On the Corsairs next possession, Rezendes drained a lay-up to make it a two-possession affair (77-72), with 40 seconds remaining.  Young would hit another huge free throw to push UMB's lead back to six, but with an off balanced 3-pointer by Genkos, Wednesday's contest quickly became a one-possession game (78-75) with 22 seconds left on the clock.

UMass Boston would turn the ball over on their next possession, giving the Corsairs the window they needed to regain the lead.  However that window was slammed shut by Agenor on a huge block, his fifth of the day, which was then recovered by Young.

Unable to maintain possession as the Beacons moved up the court, the Corsairs got one more chance at tying the game at 78-78.  Rezendes saw the opportunity at the long range shot, but it would fall short and land in the hands of Ulysse.

The New York native was quickly fouled, sending him to the charity stripe with the chance to make a two-possession game yet again.  Despite some early struggles at the free throw line, Ulysse drained one of his two shots to give UMass Boston a 79-75 lead with just seven seconds remaining.  UMass Dartmouth's final shot was once again short giving the Beacons their biggest win of 2015 so far.

On the night, UMass Boston led on the glass with a 43-33 advantage, and had a combined 13 steals and forced 18 Corsair turnovers.  From the field UMass shot an impressive 49.2% (29-59), despite only make one 3-pointer.  In the second half alone, they finished shooting 53.6% (15-28) to overcome the Corsairs strong shooting from behind the arc.

UMass Dartmouth finished shooting 40.3% from the field (27-67) and 42.3% (11-26) from 3-point land.  Neither team was solid at the line, with UMass Boston shooting 54.1% and the Corsairs 58.8%.

The Beacons return to action on Saturday when they host Plymouth State University at 3 p.m.  The Corsairs will host Eastern Connecticut State University at 3 p.m.
