HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beacons used a pair of goals midway through the first period to take control of the momentum in Sunday's non-conference game. Junior Lizzie Aveson (West Covina, Calif.) got UMass Boston on the scoreboard off of an Alli Bianchini (Detroit, Mich.) assist at the 9:54 mark. Less than a minute later, Maren Brown (Brainerd, Minn.) made it a two-goal affair as she netted her second goal of the year. Katie Barry (Abington, Mass.) and Kristin Embrey (Highlands Rach, Colo.) each earned an assist on the play.
UMass Boston would go into the first intermission leading in total shots 9-3, as they continued to play some of their best hockey under first year head coach Lindsay Berman.
After the break, the Mules got on the board with Bre Davis scoring her first goal of the year at the 1:37 mark. Fourteen minutes later, Kaleigh Beauregard (Detroit, Mich.) netted the game-winner, on an unassisted play. The goal marked the fifth of the year for the forward. Colby closed out the second period with a 13-7 advantage in shots, but were only able to get the puck past Rachel Myette (Pembroke, Mass.) once in the frame.
In the third, Samantha Fallon (Pembroke, Mass.) sealed the win for the Beacons on her second goal of the year at 3:37. Colby tried to cut into the deficit, but was once again held to just one score by the Beacons defense and Myette.
Between the pipes Myette registered 22 saves to improve to 4-1 on the year, while her Colby counterpart Jess Thulin made 19 stops in her first loss of the season.
The Mules finished 0-for-3 on the power-play, while the Beacons never once got on the PP.
