Box Score
BOSTON, Mass.—Brooke Webber scored 9:22 into overtime to lift Stevenson University (9-4-0) to their first-ever Codfish Bowl Title with a 3-2 win over UMass Boston women's hockey (6-4-4) Saturday afternoon in the 8th Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament Championship Game.
Webber took passes from Savannah Sommers and Jessie Capanelli and lifted a shot over the left-shoulder of UMass Boston goalie Moe Bradley (Swampscott, Mass.) to give the Mustangs their first-ever win over the Beacons (1-2).
Stevenson freshman Chelsea Blackburn was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament, after scoring three goals over two days. Blackburn was joined on the All-Tournament team by Stevenson goalie Sarah Modzelewski and junior forward Katie Abbott.
UMass Boston's Kayla Smith (Woburn, Mass.) and Bradley were also named to the All-Tournament Team. Bradley made 50 saves over the two-day Tournament, while Smith recorded a team-high three points.
Junior Samantha Fallon (Pembroke, Mass.) and sophomore Lizzie Aveson (West Covina, Calif.) each scored for the Beacons, who were looking to win their second-straight Codfish Bowl.
Abbott and Blackburn each scored in the third period to tie the game at 1-1 and 2-2, before Webber gave Stevenson their first-ever lead over the Beacons with her overtime goal. The two sides had faced off in each of the past two Codfish Bowl Tournaments, with UMass Boston earning 2-1 and 4-3 victories in the Semifinal Round.
Bradley stopped 30 of 33 shots, including making nine saves in the extra session.
Modzelewski stopped 36 shots for the Mustangs to improve to 6-2-0 on the season. The junior went 2-0 on the weekend and stopped 42 of 44 shots in 95 minutes of play.
Stevenson was able to hold off the Beacon thanks to their strong penalty-kill, which held UMass Boston to an 0-for-5 day. The Mustangs got back into the game in the third period on the back of their power-play, as they scored their lone power-play goal in four chances in the third stanza.
UMass Boston took an early lead just 12:20 into the contest, thanks to a deflection from Fallon. Senior defenseman Angela Dandreo (Swampscott, Mass.) sent a blast from the blue line that Fallon tipped past Modzelewski for a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second period, Abbott evened the game at 1-1 6:16 into the third. Monica Pozuc and Jessie Capanelli were credited with assists on the play.
Aveson gave the Beacons the lead right back at 13:01, when the sophomore transfer sent a wrister through Modzelewski's five-hole for a 2-1 lead. Junior Jenny Currie (Chelmsford, Mass.) and senior Alexandra Karlis (Parker, Colo.) each recorded assists on the play.
The Mustangs managed to find the equalizer 41 seconds later, when Blackburn took advantage of a Beacons' miscue and fired home a shot for a 2-2 tie.
That setup Webber's game-winner, as the junior defenseman recorded her second collegiate game-winner 9:22 into the extra session.
In the consolation game, Chatham University knocked off SUNY Canton 4-3. Chatham's Erika Martin and SUNY Canton's Lindsay Hall were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
UMass Boston will return to action Friday afternoon, when the Beacons host New England College at 4 p.m.
