BOSTON, Mass. – For the first time since the 1997-98 campaign, men's basketball has started off their season with three straight victories as the Beacons routed Newbury College (1-4) 97-76 Saturday afternoon in the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.
The Beacons impressive start was thanks in part to another huge game by senior forward Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.). With a game-high 25 points and five blocks, the Brockton native pushed the Beacons to a 3-0 record, as they continued to fire on all cylinders.
Joseph set the tone on the very first play of the game, as he blocked Newbury's first field goal attempt with authority. The early statement was quickly translated into a 10 point lead less than seven minutes into the contest. For the second straight game, the Beacons would never trail throughout the entire affair, with their biggest runs coming midway through the second half.
Also helping to get the Beacons out to a commanding lead in the first half was senior Gregory Young (Dorchester, Mass.) and Luc Ulysse (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The three seniors would combine for 37 of the Beacons 48 points in the first 20 minutes of play. Joseph led the half with 16, followed by Ulysse with 11, and Young with 10.
On the glass Karl Agenor (Dorchester, Mass.) continued to outrebound everyone on the floor as he totaled 16 boards, 10 of which were in the first half.
Collectively the Beacons shot 45.2% from the field in Saturday's win, while the defense held strong totaling a season-high 13 blocked shots, which was one short of tying the single game record. They would also come up with seven stelas and forced 16 Newbury turnovers.
Perhaps the biggest highlight of Saturday's win, was the Beacons unselfish play which resulted in an impressive 26 assists. Ulysse tallied a game-best seven helpers, followed by Young with six and Joseph with five. Junior guard Layo Medina (Brockton, Mass.) handed out four assists, and had eight points.
Senior Steven McGuire (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) had perhaps his best game in a Beacons uniform as he dropped in 11 points to go along with four boards. However it was his hustle play that kept the Beacons momentum going throughout the non-conference win.
Young closed out the day with 24 points and 10 boards, while Ulysse capped off the afternoon with 16 points and six boards.
The Beacons return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Fitchburg State University for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game.
