Men's Basketball Cruises Past Suffolk, 86-58

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – With a dominant rebounding performance by junior Karl Agenor (Dorchester, Mass.) and a career-best 31 points from senior Gregory Young (Dorchester, Mass.) men's basketball improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2010-11 season as the Beacons defeated Suffolk University 86-58 Thursday evening in the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

Agenor's night consisted of 18 defensive rebounds and six offensive rebounds, as the junior finished just one board shy of tying the all-time program record, which was set in 1985 by Jim Davis.  Along with the 24 boards, Agenor also dropped in 15 points to earn a very impressive double-double.  For Young, he finished the night 14-for-22 from the field, which included a pair of 3-pointers.

Adding to the Beacons balanced play was senior captain Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.), who finished second on the team in scoring.  The Brockton native finished 7-for-14 from the field and 7-for-11 at the line to finish second on the team with 21 points.  He also grabbed seven boards in the non-conference victory.

As a team the Beacons offense was consistent yet again shooting an impressive 45% from the field.  Defensively they held the Rams to just 28.9% shooting from the floor, as well as forcing 17 turnovers.

From the opening tip, the Beacons controlled the scoreboard and the momentum as they powered past the Rams for their seventh-straight victory over their intra-city rival.  In the opening 20 minutes, Agenor dominated the glass with 10 boards, while Young lit-up the Rams for 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, 2-for-4 from behind the arc.  Joseph, was held to just seven points and six boards in the first half due to some early foul trouble.

Layo Medina (Brockton, Mass.) quarterbacked the Beacons on both sides of the floor picking up three steals in the first half, as well as handing out two assists.  He would then tack on six more assists and earn two more steals in the second half after the Beacons entered the halftime break with a 46-30 lead.

In the final 20 minutes, the Beacons would take advantage of every possession as they continued to gain some distance on the scoreboard.

Joseph and Young combined for 26 of the team's 40 points respectively, while Agenor continued to be one-man show grabbing 14 more rebounds, five of which were on the offensive glass to close out the contest.

For the Rams, they had just one player finish in double-figures, as Sam Nwadike finished with 18 points.  Three Rams finished with seven boards, including Matt Duquette who also had a pair of blocks.

The Beacons return to action on Saturday when they host Newbury College at 3 p.m.
