Box Score
BOSTON, Mass. – Four different players recorded a goal as women's ice hockey earned their first win of the 2014-15 season as they defeated William Smith College by the final of 4-1 Friday evening in the Beacons Ice Arena.
In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, and the first-ever varsity game played by the Herons of William Smith, the Beacons came out firing on all cylinders. They would use a two-goal first period, followed by a solo goal from Alyssa Sullivan (Medford, Mass.) in the second, and an empty-netter in the third to improve 1-0-0 on the year.
For William Smith, they would get the first goal in program history midway through the third period thanks in part to Morgan Bayreuther. Freshman netminder Maggie Salmon totaled 42 saves in her varsity debut.
It would take just under 10 minutes for UMass Boston to score their first goal of the new season, when Emily Howard (Terryville, Conn.) was able squeeze the puck past Salmon to make it 1-0 Beacons. Sophomore transfer Kayla Smith (Woburn, Mass.), picked-up her first point as a member of UMass Boston on the play.
Almost 10 minutes later the Beacons would strike again, this time on the power-play with Kayla Kiernan (North Smithfield, R.I.) registering her first goal of her senior season. Sophomore defenseman Kat Armstrong (Boulder, Colo.) earned the assist, after crossing the puck to Kiernan, which she then fired at the goal, where it was then redirected past Salmon.
Following the first intermission, Sullivan pulled off a highlight real goal, when she skated around three Heron defensemen to lay in perhaps the best goal of her college career. Sullivan's goal would stand as the lone marker for the period, despite UMass' offense peppering the Herons throughout the frame. By the start of the third, the Beacons had outshot Williams Smith 32-4.
They continued the pressure in the third, but it was William Smith who got on the board first with less than nine to play in the contest. It would remain a two-goal score until the 19:19 mark when Kristen Embrey (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) tallied an empty-netter to seal the win for the Beacons. Senior Kelsey MacIsaac (Durham, N.H.) assisted the game-clinching goal for the Beacons.
Between the pipes, senior Moe Bradley (Swampscott, Mass.) made five stops in her 2014-15 debut including a break away save in the opening period.
On the night, UMass was 1-for-3 on the power-play, while the Herons finished 0-for-2.
UMass Boston and William Smith will face each other tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Beacons Ice Arena.
