Men's Tennis Blanks Ana Maria College 9-0 For Fifth Straight Victory

PAXTON, Mass.—UMass Boston earned their fifth straight victory Friday afternoon with a 9-0 thrashing of Ana Maria College at the Paxton Sports Center.

With the win, the Beacons moved to 7-3 on the season and extended their winning streak to five, their longest single-season streak since the 1990 campaign. The Amcats fell to 0-7 and 0-4 at home this year.

UMass Boston captains Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) and Alex Loyer (Chelmsford, Mass.) extended their combined unbeaten streak to 15 straight overall victories, with a doubles victory and Loyer's seventh singles win of the year.

In doubles action, Greg Fleming (Harwich Port, Mass.) and Jay Garcia (Madras, Ore.) started the match off with an 8-0 victory at number three doubles, to earn their first career wins at UMass Boston. Eglis Bizhoti (Dorchester, Mass.) and Seth Shavers (Boston, Mass.) moved up a spot to number two doubles and had no problems dispatching Cody Brigham and Ben Chick-Reny 8-1. Lai and Loyer teamed up at number one singles for the first time this season and cruised to an 8-2 victory. 

Loyer extended his singles winning streak to six straight, by starting off singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number two singles.  

Shavers put the Amcats away for good, by shutting out Chick-Reny 6-0, 6-0 at number three singles. Garcia followed up the Shavers win, with his first career singles victory, downing LeGrand Haughton 6-1, 6-2 at fourth flight singles.

Hernandez tied Loyer for the team lead with his seventh singles victory of the year, by putting away Ana Maria's Dillon George 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.

Lyle Analetto (Belmont, Mass.) made it 8-0 UMB, by earning his first singles win of the year. The junior earned a a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Corey Page at number five singles.

UMass Boston closed out the match at sixth flight singles, where Fleming handled his Amcats opponent 6-0, 6-1.

The Beacons will be right back at it Saturday afternoon, when they host Rhode Island College at 2 p.m.
