AUBURNDALE, FL - Sophomore left-handed pitcher James Dalton (Apopka, FL) hurled a four-hit complete game shutout in game one and the University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team exploded for a season-high 16 runs in game two of a doubleheader sweep over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 5-0, 16-7, today at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, FL in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Beacons improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Trailblazers fall to 1-5.
UMass Boston did all of its scoring in the first game in two innings with two runs in the first and three more in the third. Beacons' junior shortstop Dan Noonan (Westport, MA) and classmate Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) each reached via being hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first and moved to third and second, respectively, on a wild pitch with one out. Junior first baseman Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH) plated UMass Boston's first run with a sacrifice fly to right field and junior catcher Tim Fontaine (Worcester, MA) followed with a run-scoring double down the right field line for a 2-0 lead. Noonan and Walsh started another rally in the third when Noonan took another pitch off the body to break the school record for times being hit by a pitch with 22, eclipsing the old mark shared by Nao Masamoto (1998-2001) and Joe Baressi (1997-99). Walsh followed with a bases on balls to set up an RBI single through the left side by Reinfurt. Following an out, sophomore third baseman Mike Mattei (Spencer, MA) rapped a single into left field to bring home the Beacons' fourth run of the game. Senior left fielder Drew Tambling (Sterling, MA) reached on a fielder's choice to give UMass Boston a 5-0 lead, which is all it would need as Dalton took care of the rest from the mound.
Dalton struck out seven batters in seven innings, while not issuing a walk to improve to 1-1 on the season for the Beacons. Senior James Greeley (Auburndale, MA) took the loss for Massachusetts College, going the distance and allowing five runs on six hits and three walks, while fanning four in six innings of work.
The Beacons scored in every inning, including multiple runs in five frames in the afternoon's second game. UMass Boston also hit three home runs. The Beacons scored four times in the top of the first. Noonan drew a one-out walk and later scored on a single to left by Fontaine. Reinfurt, who earlier reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on the play and both runners scored on Mattei's first collegiate home run over the left field fence. Massachusetts College answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to pull to within 4-3. Sophomore left fielder Rick Massey (Cheshire, MA) sent a two-out single to center field and later came home on a double to center field by junior third baseman Paul Procopio (Pittsfield, MA). Junior designated hitter Osiris Mendez (Queens, NY) and junior first baseman Bobby Beauchesne (Lowell, MA) each followed with run-producing singles to cut the deficit to 4-3.
UMass Boston scored the game's next six runs to take a 10-3 advantage. Sophomore center fielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) launched his second home run of the year in the second inning and Walsh led off the third with his first homer of the season to give the Beacons a 6-3 margin. Tambling later knocked in a run with a ground out to make it 7-3. UMass Boston tacked on two more runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Noonan and a wild pitch. McCormack drove in another run in the fifth with a ground out for their 10th run. Senior second baseman Tim Burns (Pittsfield, MA) doubled to open the bottom of the fifth and came around to score on a homer to left field by senior catcher Ken Recore (Averill Park, NY) to pull the Trailblazers to within 10-5.
The Beacons got two runs back in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Mattei and an RBI single from Tambling, but Massachusetts College responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to make it 12-7. Mendez was hit by a pitch with one out and freshman first baseman Shea Carlson (Dalton, MA) followed with a double down the left field line to put a pair of runners in scoring position for the Trailblazers. Burns followed with a double as well to bring home two runs. UMass Boston capped the scoring with four runs in the seventh , fueled by two-run singles by Walsh and Fontaine to give the Beacons a 16-7 lead.
Sophomore Dan Gambill (Lake Worth, FL) earned the victory for UMass Boston, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and a walk, while setting down four on strikes. Noonan made his season debut on the mound, striking out all three batters he faced for a clean seventh inning. Wyand was the game two starter for Massachusetts College and suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits and a walk to go with a strikeout in two and a third innings.
Mattei finished game two going 3-4 with four runs batted in to lead the Beacons, while Fontaine collected four hits and drove in three. Walsh also knocked in three runs with a pair of hits. Burns led the Trailblazers with two hits and two RBI, while Massey went 2-4 with a run scored.
