The University of Massachusetts Boston Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the appointment of Bryan Costello as Associate Director for Athletic Communications (November 2026).
In his role, Costello will oversee the department's communications, broadcast, and creative content, working closely with coaches, student-athletes, and media partners. He will also help enhance the visibility of the Beacons brand through storytelling and digital engagement.
Costello brings eight years of experience in athletic communications. He spent the past five years at Clark University as Director of Athletic Communications. During his time at Clark, Costello played a key role in expanding and modernizing the department's communications and digital presence across their 17 varsity sports. Â
He helped brand and launch Clark Athletics' new SIDEARM Sports website and developed a broadcasting and video production plan following the department's media agreement with FloSports. He oversaw the athletics website, statistics and record keeping while producing press releases, feature stories, game coverage and highlight videos designed to promote Clark's student-athletes and programs.
Costello was instrumental in the planning and execution of NEWMAC Championship events hosted by Clark, working closely with coaches, administrators and conference personnel to create successful championship experiences. He served on the NEWMAC Awards Committee and worked closely with Clark's Marketing and Communications Office as well as the Clark Athletics Hall of Fame.
Â
In addition to his communications responsibilities, Costello oversaw the hiring and training of athletic gameday staff and has helped develop the department's athletic communications assistant. His work spans traditional media relations, digital communications, social media, video production, website management, statistical operations, event management, and athletic branding.
Â
Costello came to Clark after serving as an athletic communications graduate assistant at Division I Fairleigh Dickinson University from 2019-2021. Also spending time with Tufts and Babson as an Athletic Communications Intern.
Â
Costello graduated from FDU School of Sports Management with a master's degree in Sports Administration in 2021. He received his bachelor's degree in Sports Management from Lasell College in 2018.
He will join UMass Boston Sports Information Assistant David Cataloni, who has been with the Beacons since the fall of 2023. Together, the two will elevate the Beacons' presence on the local, regional, and national stage, bringing a shared emphasis on storytelling rooted in the student-athlete experience.
"I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to join UMass Boston Athletics as the Associate Director for Athletic Communications," said Costello.
"I want to thank Dr. Schuman andÂ
Stephanie Dollar for their confidence in me and for providing me with this opportunity. UMass Boston has a tremendous tradition of athletic and academic success, and I look forward to being part of a department that is committed to providing outstanding experience for its student-athletes. I am excited to bring my experience and passion for collegiate athletics to the Beacons community, work alongside our coaches, student-athletes, and staff, and help continue telling the stories that make UMass Boston Athletics special."
Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Jacqueline Schuman added, "Bryan brings a wealth of experience and a diverse skill set to the Beacons that will immediately enhance our game-day operations, elevate the student-athlete experience, and strengthen our ability to tell the stories that reflect the impact and mission of UMass Boston Athletics. We are fortunate to welcome him to our Harbor Campus and excited about the contributions he will make to our department."
