Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Williams Scores in Beacons’ Effort Against Lasell

NEWTON, MA (September 30, 2026) -- UMass Boston field hockey (0-9) took a short drive for midweek nonconference action against Lasell University (5-3). The Beacons showed valiant effort and made things difficult for the Lasers, but ultimately fell 6-1. Delaney Williams (Duxbury, Mass.) linked up with first-year Molly Fote (Houston, Tex.) for the Beacons' only goal of the evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Lasell applied immediate pressure in the opening period, generating 13 shots and taking a 1-0 lead . Goalkeeper Jenna Smolinski (East Aurora, N.Y.) stood tall in the first period, turning away six shots to keep the Beacons within striking distance.

The Lasers extended their advantage in the second period, pushing the lead to 3-0 before the halftime horn.

UMass Boston responded with its best stretch of the game in the third period. Williams converted on a penalty corner play in the 32nd minute, assisted by Fote, to put the Beacons on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1. Williams' goal was the team's lone tally of the night and gave the program a moment to build on. Lasell answered however, with the Lasers finding the back of the net just two minutes later to re-establish a three-goal cushion.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • UMass Boston generated four of its five total shots and all four shots on goal during the third period, outpacing Lasell 4-3 in that frame — the team's most productive offensive quarter of the match.

  • Williams enters the season with four goals, leading the team in that category in 2026. Fote's assist on the goal was her second of the season, giving her the team lead in assists.

  • UMass Boston used a split in net, with Smolinski working the first half and Elizabeth Crowley (Medford, Mass.) taking over for the second. Smolinski made eight saves in the opening half as Lasell generated heavy early pressure, including six stops in the first period alone.

  • Alexis D'Angelo (Monroe, Conn.) led UMass Boston with two shots and one shot on goal, continuing to pace the team's offense. She now has 24 shots on the season.

  • UMass Boston earned six penalty corners on the night, tying for the second-highest single-game total of the season. The Beacons fall to 0-9 on the year.

UP NEXT:

  • UMass Boston returns home Saturday, Oct. 3, hosting UMass Dartmouth in Newton, MA, at the Charles River Campus of UMass Amherst in the program's first-ever home conference matchup.
