NORTON, Mass. (Sept. 16, 2026) – The UMass Boston volleyball team continued its strong start to 2026 with a 3-0 sweep of the Wheaton (Mass.) Lyons on Wednesday evening at the Evelyn Danzig Haas Athletic Center in Norton.
With the victory, the Beacons are now 7-2 on the year and Wheaton falls to 3-5.
Set One (25-17):
The Beacons won six of the first seven points of the night and later held a 12-6 advantage following a Lyons' set error. From there, Wheaton was able to battle back to cut the deficit to three at 18-15 before UMass Boston captured seven of the final nine points and
Addie Blomgren (Riverside, Ill.) delivered a kill to seal the 25-17 victory.
Set Two (31-29):
Throughout the second set, the two teams exchanged runs and the Lyons led 12-10 before six straight Beacons points made it 16-12 in favor of the visitors. First year
Lily Russell (Bourne, Mass.) recorded consecutive service aces to extend the lead to 22-17, but Wheaton fought back to even things at 24. UMass Boston then survived multiple set points for Wheaton and rallied to win four of the final five points en route to the 31-29 win and a two-set lead.
Set Three (25-22):
Holding an early 5-4 lead, head coach
Stacy Cheney's team took advantage of three Lyons' attacking errors during a six-point run to extend the advantage to 11-4. Later in the set,
Mya Perron (Beverly, Mass.) delivered a kill that made it 21-11 before eight straight points from Wheaton trimmed the deficit to a pair. However, UMass Boston was able to hold the lead throughout and a service error clinched the straight set victory.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Paige Coulson (Marriottsville, Md.) led a balanced attack with eight kills and a .368 hitting percentage, while
Adele Accelus (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Blomgren tallied five kills apiece.
Audrey Cofield (Ypsilanti, Mich.) distributed 23 assists in the match and added two block assists and three digs for the Beacons.
Blomgren registered four total blocks in the victory and Coulson posted 10 digs.
As a team, UMass Boston recorded 10 service aces with four different players recording two apiece.
Ashlee Wudi (Brookfield, Ill.) was one of the four Beacons with two service aces to go along with her team-high 11 digs.
