BOSTON, Mass. (Sept. 12, 2026) – Sophomore goalie Janiya Morales Matier (North Easton, Mass.) made seven saves as the UMass Boston Beacons women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the WPI Engineers on Saturday afternoon at James Cotter Field.

The Beacons are now 1-3-1 on the year, while WPI improves to 2-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Both teams drew early corner kick attempts in the opening 10 minutes of the match and a shot from WPI's Abigail Johnson rang off the post in the seventh minute as things remained scoreless. Morales Matier tallied a pair of saves and the Beacons' backline held strong with the game deadlocked at zero at halftime.

Devan Booth (Manchester, N.H.) had a scoring chance for UMass Boston in the 54^th minute with her shot going just wide and the Engineers capitalized just over four minutes later with an unassisted goal from Katie Adiletta to take a 1-0 lead.

Morales Matier registered four saves over the final 30 plus minutes to keep things within a goal as the Beacons searched for an equalizer before falling just short.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

Head coach Amy Zombeck's team has allowed one goal or less in four of their five games on the season.

Saturday's match marked the start of a four-game homestand for the Beacons.

UMass Boston will host Curry College on Wednesday, Sept. 16 with kick off at James Cotter Field scheduled for 7 p.m.
