NEWTON, MASS. (April 3, 2026) -- UMass Boston women's lacrosse (3-8, 1-1 Little East Conference) saw its three-game winning streak end Friday afternoon in a 13-11 defeat to Eastern Connecticut State at the Charles River Campus of UMass Amherst in a Pediatric Cancer Awareness Game. The Beacons (3-8, 1-1 Little East Conference) battled back from a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter but ultimately fell just short in their second league contest of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UMass Boston made an early statement, jumping ahead 2-1 in the opening minutes on player-up goals from Morgan Holohan (Averill Park, N.Y.) and Teresa Sheedy (Quincy, Mass.). The Beacons closed the first quarter with a 4-3 lead behind balanced scoring and a strong defensive effort, highlighted by Sheedy's two-player up tallies and key ground balls. Early in the second, Lily Tillinghast (Cranston, R.I.) pushed the advantage to 5-3 with her first collegiate goal, but Eastern Connecticut State responded with a decisive 5-0 run fueled by Hannah Seltzer's four-goal outburst. That surge flipped the game, sending the Beacons into halftime trailing 8-5.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle. Ava Duffy (Boston, Mass.) and Jamie McAleavey (Quincy, Mass.) each found the net to keep UMass Boston close, while Angelina Mazzone (Beverly, Mass.) scored on a player-up free-position opportunity to pull within one at 9-8. Despite the rally, Eastern Connecticut State answered with two late goals to carry an 11-8 lead into the fourth.
With under 10 minutes left, the Beacons orchestrated a dramatic comeback. Duffy, Holohan, and Kaitlyn Ondrick (Westfield, Mass.) scored three consecutive goals—two from the free-position arc—cutting the deficit to 12-11 with 7:23 to play. However, Eastern Connecticut State's Alexa Vizzini tallied her seventh goal of the day at 5:03, sealing the visitors' win and dropping UMass Boston to 1-1 in the Little East Conference.
