Boston, Mass. (April 28th, 2026) - The UMass Boston Beacons (18-18, 6-8 LEC) baseball program captured one of the biggest wins of it's season, and snapped a four-game losing skid with an impressive 4-3 victory over the Southern Maine Huskies (25-9, 12-2 LEC).
How It Happened
Southern Maine came into Tuesday's Little East Conference matchup with the Beacons only 5 days removed from an upset win over the third-ranked team in the nation, the Salve Regina University Seahawks, but coming off a road loss to Bates College over the weekend. At Monan Park in Boston, the Beacons' pitching staff gave them trouble.
The Beacons came out hitting well, in the bottom of the first Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) hit a two-run RBI double to drive in Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, NH) and Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, NY) to give the Beacons an early 2-0 lead against Huskies' pitcher Carson Black.
Farnacci added an RBI of his own in the 4th to increase the Beacons' lead in the bottom of the fourth. Before Peter Keblinsky answered instantly with a two-run RBI single in the top of the fifth to get the Huskies on the board.
Drew Scialdone scored from third in the top of the sixth to tie the scoreline at three apiece, before the Beacons once again took the lead in the bottom half of that same inning thanks to a Wes Sturrup (Rochester, NY) single that scored Nicolas Piscioniere (Shelton, Conn.) to give the Beacons what would be the deciding run in the conference clash.
The key story was the Beacons' pitching. First-year RHP Robert Wunsch (South Windsor, Conn.) had a day to remember, striking out four while only allowing just two earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Owen Ellsworth (Northborough, Mass.), Austin Stone (Boylston, Mass.), & Ben Cherry (Manchester, Conn.) each pitched shutout baseball to seal the victory for the Beacons.
