Baseball Drops Non-Conference Road Contest at Salve Regina

Newport, R.I. (April 29, 2026) – UMass Boston Baseball (18-19) dropped an 8-2 decision at Salve Regina (31-4) on Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Field, as the Beacons battled back from an early seven-run deficit before Salve Regina's pitching staff shut the door over the final six innings.

How it Happened:

Salve Regina struck quickly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run single from Elliot Hamilton and an RBI double from Dylan Cimini, then added three more in the second to take a 7-0 advantage after two frames.

UMass Boston answered in the top of the third. Wes Sturrup (Rochester, NY) led off by reaching on a hit-by-pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Dylan Agvent (Orange, Conn.). Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, NY) doubled and came around to score on an RBI single from Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.), trimming the deficit to 7-2 and showing the Beacons weren't going quietly.

From there, UMass Boston's bullpen took over and delivered. Hunter Ward (Nashua, NH) worked 4.1 solid innings of relief, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out three. Kyle McLaughlin (Auburn, Mass.) followed with a clean seventh inning, and Jack Cangelosi (Williamstown, Mass.) was dominant in the eighth, striking out all three batters he faced on 12 pitches.

Salve Regina added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single from Jake Harring, but the Beacon bullpen held the Seahawks off the board the rest of the way, limiting the nation's fourth-ranked Division III program to just one run over the final 6.1 innings.

By the Numbers:

  • Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, NH) went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, giving him four on the season entering Wednesday.
  • Brandon Gaer finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, one of two Beacons with multiple hits.

  • Jack Cangelosi worked a perfect eighth inning, retiring all three batters on strikes.
