BOSTON, MA (April 21, 2026) — A promising start for the UMass Boston men's lacrosse team (9-7, 5-2 Little East Conference) was undone by a second-half surge from Western Connecticut State, as the Beacons fell 9-6 in a Little East Conference action on Tuesday at the James Cotter Field.
The Beacons came out firing, establishing a 3-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. Nolen Beauregard (Walpole, Mass.)opened the scoring less than two minutes in, followed by back-to-back goals from Jack Schartner (Bolton, Mass.). After Western Connecticut got on the board, UMass Boston extended its lead in the second quarter with goals from Cole Allan (Falmouth, Me.) and Matthew Konareski (Guilford, Conn.) to take a commanding 5-2 lead into the break.
Schartner completed his hat trick early in the third quarter to push the lead to 6-3, but the momentum shifted from there. Western Connecticut State dominated the remainder of the period, scoring five unanswered goals to seize a 7-6 lead heading into the final frame. The Wolves' defense locked down in the fourth quarter, holding the Beacons scoreless while adding two insurance goals to secure the comeback victory.
Schartner's three goals led all scorers in the contest. In net, goalie James Boldy (Wrentham, Mass.) made 16 saves in a full 60 minutes of action. Defensively, Matt Laverty (Barnstable, Mass.) paced the team with three caused turnovers, and Tyler Hilgert (Guilford, Conn.) collected a team-high four ground balls while also contributing an assist. Despite the loss, UMass Boston was efficient on clears, successfully converting 26 of 28 attempts.
