BOSTON, Mass. (April 21, 2026) – UMass Boston baseball (17-16, 5-7 Little East Conference) was undone by a three-run eighth inning, falling 4-1 to LEC rival UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon at Monan Park despite a dominant start from pitcher Robert Wunsch (South Windsor, CT) and a perfect day at the plate for freshman Wes Sturrup (Rochester, NY).
The game began as a pitcher's duel, with both starters trading scoreless frames early. The Corsairs broke through first with a run in the third inning on an RBI single. UMass Boston answered in the bottom of the fifth when Sturrup led off with a single, advanced on the bases and scored on a fielder's choice RBI from Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, NY) to tie the game 1-1.
The game remained deadlocked until the top of the eighth inning. The Corsairs loaded the bases and plated three runs against the Beacons' bullpen to take a decisive 4-1 lead. The rally was fueled by an RBI single, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. Reliever Connor Curtis (Mansfield, MA) took the loss after being charged with all three runs, while Owen Ellsworth (Northborough, MA) entered to record the final two outs of the frame.
Wunsch was brilliant in a no-decision, striking out 10 batters over six innings while allowing just one run on five hits. Offensively, Sturrup accounted for four of the Beacons' six total hits, going 4-for-4 and scoring the team's only run. The Beacons' pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts, with Alex Meesig (Nashua, NH) and Jonny Pagano (Attleboro, MA) each contributing a scoreless inning of relief.
