NEWTON, MA (March 25, 2026) – UMass Boston women's lacrosse (2-7) notched a 9-7 non-conference victory over Fitchburg State (2-5) on the Charles River Campus of UMass Amherst, formerly Mount Ida College. Behind multi-goal efforts from Angelina Mazzone (Beverly, Mass.) and Ava Duffy (Boston, Mass.), the Beacons head into conference play having won two consecutive contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind early in the first quarter, UMass Boston responded with a woman-up goal from Rae Alexander (Georgia, Vt.), assisted by Duffy, to tie the score at 1-1. Fitchburg State reclaimed the lead to close the opening frame, but the Beacons seized control with a dominant second quarter, outscoring the Falcons 3-0 while outshooting them 10-1. That surge, powered by free position goals from Mazzone and Morgan Holohan (Averill Park, N.Y.), flipped the script and sent UMass Boston into halftime ahead 4-2.
Fitchburg State clawed back in the third quarter, but a timely goal from Teresa Sheedy (Quincy, Mass.) and a clutch finish from Duffy kept the Beacons in front. The fourth quarter brought more drama as the Falcons cut the gap to a single goal, but UMass Boston's five free position goals on the day proved decisive. Mazzone opened the fourth-quarter scoring with her second free position goal of the game, before Kaitlyn Ondrick (Westfield, Mass.) and Samantha DeMarco (Bayville, N.J.) added timely finishes to seal the Beacons' second consecutive victory heading into conference play.
