BOSTON, Mass. (March 10, 2026) – UMass Boston men's lacrosse (2-1) suffered its first setback of the season Tuesday afternoon at the James Cotter Field, dropping an 18-11 non-conference decision to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1-2). The Beacons move to 2-1 on the year after the Engineers used decisive advantages in faceoffs and ground balls to pull away despite standout performances from Jack Schartner (Bolton, Mass.) and James Boldy (Wrentham, Mass.).
How It Happened
UMass Boston traded early goals with MIT in an energetic first quarter. After MIT got on the board, Schartner answered with his first tally of the day, knotting the score at one. The Engineers responded with a three-goal run to go up 4-1 before Schartner struck again off a feed from Tyler Hilgert (Guilford, Conn.), cutting the deficit to two at the end of the opening period.
The second quarter proved pivotal as MIT surged ahead. The Engineers opened the fram on a four-goal unanswered run, before Jaden Cronin (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Hilgert cut the deficit to five before the halftime horn.
UMass Boston mounted a strong response in the third quarter, with Schartner and teammates Cole Allan (Falmouth, Maine), Ryan Steckman-Buck (North Massapequa, N.Y.) and Hank Alessandro (Barrington, R.I.) fueling a six-goal outburst. Schartner completed his hat trick and added a fourth, while Hilgert picked up his second of the day as the Beacons trimmed the deficit to just four goals entering the fourth.
The Engineers regrouped in the final period, tightening their defense and limiting UMass Boston to just one goal, scored by Reilly Collins (Portsmouth, N.H.) late in the frame. MIT capitalized on additional possessions created by faceoff wins and ground ball dominance, netting four goals in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Despite a relentless 23-save effort from junior goalie James Boldy (Wrentham, Mass.), the Beacons could not overcome the Engineers' sustained offensive pressure.
