GORHAM, Maine (Oct. 7, 2026) — The UMass Boston Beacons (4-4-3, 3-0-1 LEC) traveled to Hannaford Field on Wednesday and came away with a resilient 2-0 shutout victory over Southern Maine (6-5-1, 2-2), converting two of four shots on goal while goalkeeper Janiya Morales Matier (North Easton, Mass.) turned away all 11 shots she faced to earn a hard-fought clean sheet.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Madi Pittman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) broke the deadlock in the 39th minute, coming off the bench to convert a deflected ball and a magical assist from Camryn Trick (Sammamish, Wash.) for her second goal of the season. Trick's pass from her own defensive midfield found Pittman in stride behind the Huskies defense for the opener. Lorelai Leddy (West Greenwich, R.I.) doubled the advantage in the 65th minute, finishing on her only shot of the game off a feed from Cloe Kapetanakos (Weymouth, Mass.) to put the result beyond doubt. Southern Maine pressed relentlessly in the second half — generating 15 of its 22 total shots after the break — but Morales Matier and the Beacons' defense held firm throughout, preserving the 2-0 final.
Morales Matier was the story of the night, posting 11 saves — a new season high, surpassing the 10-save efforts she had turned in twice earlier this year. She played all 90 minutes and did not allow a goal despite Southern Maine's 22-shot barrage, which included a Lexi Morin attempt that struck the post in the 79th minute. The shutout is Morales Matier's sixth of 2026 and pushes her season save total to 80.
The victory gives the Beacons back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season, following a 1-0 home win over Western Connecticut on Oct. 3. UMass Boston has now blanked opponents six times in 11 games in 2026. The efficiency on offense was equally striking: the Beacons converted two of their four shots on goal — a 50% conversion rate — while Southern Maine, which held a 6-to-1 edge in corner kicks and outshot UMass Boston in both halves, could not find a way past Morales Matier. Trick played all 90 minutes and finished with one assist, while Kapetanakos now leads the team with three assists in 2026.
