NEWTON, Mass. (Oct. 14, 2026) – The UMass Boston Beacons field hockey team (0-12) battled until the final buzzer, but came up just short in a 1-0 loss to the Gordon College Fighting Scots (2-13) on Wednesday at the Charles River Campus of UMass Amherst in Newton.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Just under five minutes into the game, Gordon's Josie Gayer had her initial shot denied by Beacons' goalie
Jenna Smolinski (East Aurora, N.Y.) but quickly pounced on the rebound and gave the visitors a 1-0 edge. Smolinski added a pair of saves later in the quarter that kept it at a one-goal game.
UMass Boston began to put together some offensive chances in the second period, but a shot by
Molly Fote (Houston, Texas) in the 26
th minute was cleared away for a defensive save by Gordon's Parker Minzy.
Smolinski continued to send tall in goal in the third quarter and made three saves on shots that came as a result of two penalty corner opportunities. The Beacons then tallied five penalty corners in the fourth quarter and came up just short in the search for an equalizer.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Gordon held a slight 11-9 advantage in shots and
Meghan Krockta (Taunton, Mass.) paced UMass Boston with three.
Smolinski played all 60 minutes in goal and tallied six saves, while Haylee Briggs made four for the Fighting Scots.
This marked the final non-conference game for the Beacons in their inaugural season.
