Schallmo’s Hat Trick Lifts Beacons Over Bears in Home Opener

BOSTON, MA (September 3, 2025) – The UMass Boston women's soccer team improved to 2-0 with a dominant 4-1 victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy (0-2) in their home opener, powered by sophomore striker Sofia Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) and her third career hat trick.

Sophomore midfielder Daniella Celotto (Prospect, Conn.) sparked the Beacons' opening attack just 90 seconds into the match. Her through ball up the middle found first-year Lorelai Leddy (West Greenwich, R.I.) in stride for a one-on-one chance with the Bears' keeper. Although Leddy's initial shot was saved, the rebound fell to a trailing Schallmo, who finished the opportunity to give UMass Boston an early lead. The goal marked Schallmo's first of the season and the first collegiate point for Leddy.

Schallmo doubled the advantage minutes later. Junior midfielder Amanda Regan (Pepperell, Mass.) played an over-the-top through ball that sprung Schallmo free from midfield. After beating multiple Coast Guard defenders, she calmly slotted her shot home into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 less than 10 minutes in.

The Bears answered in the 35th minute when Lulu Vklases' corner found the head of Mia Carabajal-Hartog, who finished to cut the deficit to 2-1.

UMass Boston responded quickly. Senior Callia Eaton (Mashpee, Mass.) capitalized on a poor clearance, sending a perfectly placed chip from 35 yards out over the keeper for her sixth career goal — and first since 2023 — to restore the two-goal cushion.

Both teams entered halftime with seven shots apiece. First-year goalkeeper Janiya Matier (North Easton, Mass.) made two saves in the opening frame, while the Beacons committed just one foul.

Schallmo completed her hat trick early in the second half, drawing a penalty and converting from the spot with a composed strike to the bottom corner. The goal sealed the Beacons' commanding 4-1 win.

Matier finished with four saves on five shots on goal, facing 10 total attempts from the Bears.
