BOSTON, Mass. (September 1, 2025) – Senior midfielder Ryan Lima (Minas Gerais, Brazil) scored twice to lead the UMass Boston men's soccer team (1-0-2) to a dominant 4-0 victory over the Occidental College Tigers (1-2) on Labor Day afternoon.
The Beacons wasted no time applying pressure, recording two shots in the opening minutes from Lima and John Arruda (Espirito Santo, Brazil). In the third minute, Rafael Gross (Minas Gerais, Brazil) opened the scoring with a volley off a cross from Ryan Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) for his 10th career goal, and the Beacons' first of four on the day.
Arruda doubled the lead just five minutes later. Lima drove down the right wing and sent in a left-footed cross that was deflected towards Quinn O'Hearn (Waterford, Va.). O'Hearn's shot rang off the woodwork and fell to Arruda, who tapped it home for a 2-0 advantage.
In the 27th minute, Lima drew contact in the box and calmly buried the ensuing penalty kick into the bottom right corner, sending the Beacons into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
UMass Boston's defense held firm throughout the opening half, turning away a late surge from Occidental that featured four shots in the final 20 minutes.
The Beacons added their fourth and final tally in the 59th minute when graduate goalkeeper JJ Devine (Halifax, Mass.) launched a clearance that bounced over the Tigers' back line. Lima ran onto the ball and chipped the keeper for his second of the day to seal the 4-0 victory.
