BABSON PARK, MA (August 30, 2025) – Junior forward John Arruda (Espirito Santo, Brazil) netted his first goal of the season as the Beacons (0-0-2) battled to a 1–1 draw on the road against the No. 5 nationally ranked Babson College Beavers (1-0-1). A second-half penalty allowed Babson to equalize, but UMass Boston stood tall to secure an impressive early-season result against one of the nation's top programs.
Arruda opened the scoring in the 23rd minute on the Beacons' third shot of the day. Senior midfielder Ryan Lima (Minas Gerais, Brazil) dispossessed a Babson defender in the back third and quickly pushed forward before sending in a pinpoint cross. Arruda met the ball in stride and calmly finished to give UMass Boston its first goal of the 2025 campaign.
The first half was tightly contested, with Babson holding a narrow 5–4 edge in shots, while the Beacons led in corners 3–1.
The Beavers found their equalizer in the 61st minute, converting from the penalty spot to level the score. Babson continued to press the attack throughout the second half, outshooting the Beacons 9–3 and forcing two saves from graduate goalkeeper JJ Devine (Halifax, Mass.). Despite the pressure, UMass Boston's defense weathered the storm to preserve the draw.
In a physical matchup, the two sides combined for 33 fouls and seven total bookings, with UMass Boston whistled for 19 fouls.
The Beacons return to action on Monday, September 2, when they host Occidental College at 12 p.m. on the BC High JV Field.
