MANSFIELD, Conn. (May 10, 2025) – UMass Boston (31-11-1) kept it's championship hopes alive with a thrilling 8-6 win over No. 3 Plymouth State (28-15) in Game Ten of the 2025 Little East Conference Tournament. With the Panthers suffering their first loss of the postseason, Sunday's Game Eleven at 10:00 a.m. will serve as a winner-take-all finale to decide the 2025 LEC Tournament Champion.
The Beacons were backed by a strong start from Jacqueline Cherry (Franklin, Mass.), who worked five total innings, allowing five hits and striking out three across 26 batters faced. Bri Melchionda (Marshfield, Mass.) took over in relief and was lights out, pitching two dominant innings with three strikeouts, just one hit allowed, and no earned runs to earn the save.
How It Happened:
-
UMass Boston opened the scoring in the top of the first with two runs on two hits. Hayley Krockta (Taunton, Mass.) delivered a sacrifice fly before Lauren Miner (Millbury, Mass.) roped an RBI double to bring home both Haley Tilberry (Moosic, Penn.) and Melchionda.
-
Plymouth State quickly responded in the bottom of the first with a three-run inning, including an RBI double and a two-run homer, taking a 3-2 lead.
-
After a quiet second inning, the Beacons surged ahead in the third. Back-to-back doubles from Miner and Amauri English (North Providence, R.I.) reclaimed the lead at 4-3. Mary Matthews (Wilsonville, Ore.) chipped in an infield RBI single, then scored on an RBI double from Ella Delisle (Amesbury, Mass.) to give UMass Boston a 6-3 edge.
-
The Panthers tied the game at 6-6 in the fourth with three runs via a fielder's choice and a pair of productive groundouts.
-
In the top of the sixth, with two outs and runners on first and second, Krockta smashed a hard liner that ricocheted off the third baswoman's glove. A wild throw followed, allowing both runners—Melchionda and Sofie Richland (South Burlington, Vt.)—to cross the plate and reclaim an 8-6 lead for the Beacons.
-
Melchionda shut the door from there. She pitched a clean sixth inning with help from Tilberry's glove and then struck out three of four batters in the seventh to lock down the win and hand Plymouth State its first loss of the tournament.
By the Numbers:
-
The Beacons finished 10-for-30 (.333) at the plate with seven RBIs, as eight of ten batters recorded at least one hit.
-
Miner and Delisle led the offense with two hits apiece. Krockta and English each tallied two RBIs.
-
UMass Boston doubled four times—two from Miner, and one each from English and Delisle.
-
The Beacons stayed aggressive on the bases, collecting three steals courtesy of Richland, Tilberry, and Matthews.
What's Next:
The LEC crown will be decided in Sunday's Game Eleven at 10:00 a.m., as UMass Boston and Plymouth State clash one final time in a true winner-take-all battle for the 2025 Little East Tournament Championship.
