Baseball Upsets 2024 LEC Champion Corsairs in Extra Innings on the Road

DARTMOUTH, MA (April 9, 2025) – Graduate left-handed pitcher Thomas Kierce (Cohasset, Mass.) earned his third win of the season with a dominant three-inning, five-strikeout, scoreless outing, helping the Beacons edge the 2024 Little East Conference Tournament Champions, the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs, in a 6-5 extra-inning victory.

UMass Boston: 16-8, 6-1 LEC (#2 in LEC)
UMass Dartmouth: 10-10, 3-2 LEC (#3 in LEC)

How It Happened:

UMass Boston utilized three arms on the day, with Kierce slamming the door shut in the final three frames. Senior Ross Dexter (Milton, Mass.) handled the opening 5.2 innings, striking out six while allowing just four hits across 25 batters. Logan Lawrence (Taunton, Mass.) bridged the gap with 1.1 innings in the middle.

  • The Corsairs opened scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first.

  • UMass Boston answered with a four-run third inning. Richard Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) laced a two-run single to right, scoring Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.). Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) followed with an RBI double to give the Beacons a 4-1 lead.

  • UMass Dartmouth responded with a sac fly in the bottom half to cut it to 4-2.

  • The Corsairs plated another in the sixth off a bases-loaded RBI single, narrowing the lead to one.

  • Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.) delivered an RBI single up the middle in the seventh to bring home Jimenez, giving the Beacons a 5-3 advantage heading into the stretch.

  • A costly Beacons' error and a wild pitch allowed UMass Dartmouth to tie the game at 5-5 by the end of nine innings.

  • In the top of the 10th, the Beacons loaded the bases. Breon Parker (Springfield, Mass.) legged out an infield single, and chaos ensued on a throwing error at second base, allowing Farnacci to score the go-ahead run on the fielder's choice.

  • Kierce closed out the bottom of the 10th with back-to-back strikeouts, sealing the extra-inning road win for his third save of the season, tied for most saves in the LEC this season.

By the Numbers:

  • The Beacons totaled nine hits in 35 at-bats with six different players recording a hit. Meagher, Jacob Levine (Easton, Mass.), and Farnacci each had two hits to lead the offense.

  • Williams paced the team with two RBIs.

  • Jimenez was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and added his conference-leading 16th stolen base in as many attempts.

  • Jimenez, Gaer, and Parker each swiped a bag.

  • Meagher and Levine combined for 22 of the team's 30 poutouts, while Ryan Slack (Derby, Conn.) led the way with five assists from third base.

The Beacons return home tomorrow (April 10) at 3:00 p.m. to host Suffolk University in their Mental Health Awareness Game at Monan Park. For full coverage and live updates, visit the Beacons Official Athletics Website.
