BOSTON, MA (April 10, 2025) – The UMass Boston baseball team (17-8, 6-1 Little East Conference) rode a dominant six-run sixth inning and a gritty pitching performance to a 7-4 home win over Suffolk University (7-18, 1-5 Conference of New England) on Thursday afternoon. Justin Silverstein (Shelton, Conn.), Keenan Metrick (Malvern, Penn.), and Hunter Ward (Nashua, N.H.) combined for 14 strikeouts, while Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) led the offensive charge with a towering two-run homer.
How It Happened
UMass Boston used three pitchers in the win. Silverstein got the start, tossing three innings of no-hit ball with five strikeouts, including a crucial backward 'K' to escape a jam in the first. He was followed by Metrick, who struck out five over three innings of relief, including three in the sixth to earn his second win of the season. Ward closed it out with three innings of his own, notching four strikeouts and collecting his first save this season.
-
Through the first four and a half innings, it was a pitching duel as both teams traded zeros across the scoreboard.
-
The Beacons broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) ripped an RBI single to right-center, scoring Ryan Slack (Derby, Conn.).
-
The game broke open in the sixth as UMass Boston erupted for six runs. After a single by Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.), Miles launched a towering two-run shot to left, making it 3-0. A hit batter and two singles loaded the bases before Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.) drove in another with an RBI single. Gaer then added to the tally with a fielder's choice RBI, and Richard Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) capped the frame with a two-run double into the left-center gap.
-
Suffolk answered the ninth, scoring four runs. A hit batter and a double set up a sac fly to make it 7-1. An infield single and an error brought home another, and two RBI singles trimmed the lead to 7-4.
-
With the tying run at the plate, Ward shut the door, inducing a game-ending 5-4-3 double play to preserve the win.
By the Numbers
-
Gaer, Williams, and Miles each tallied two RBIs.
-
Miles now leads the LEC with 30 RBIs on the season.
-
Jimenez went 3-for-5 with an RBI to pace the offense.
-
The Beacons' pitching staff allowed just one hit through the first eight innings.
