BOSTON, MA (April 29, 2025) -- The Beacons' men's tennis team slayed the Salem State Vikings 5-2 in the first round of the LEC Postseason Tournament from the B.C High Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon, advancing to the LEC Semi Finals for the third time in four seasons, beginning on Thursday, May 1 against the LEC No. 2 seeded Bridgewater State Bears in Bridgewater, MA.
UMass Boston jumped out to a 2-1 lead following doubles play, as Joseph Malone (Dennis, Mass.) and James Tiger Li (Quincy, Mass.) combined for an 8-3 win at third doubles over Salem's tandem of Josh Gruber and Michael Muttiah before Dominik Dwyer (Dedham, Mass.) and Victor Xu (Bolton, Mass.) closed out a 9-7 (7-4) win over Quentin Wilkins and Mark Wood at first doubles.
The Beacons claimed three of the four singles matches that were played to completion to close out the win. Xu topped Wood at second singles with a pair of 6-1 set wins, while Maxwell Dill (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) dispatched Lachlan Hall 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) at third singles and Li defeated Kevin Merino-Rivas 6-0, 6-2.
The Vikings second doubles pairing of Hall and Merino-Rivas were 8-4 winners over Dill and Shrenith Saravana Rakshana (Bengaluru, India), giving them a chance to rally in single play. Wilkins would claim Salem State's lone singles point by topping Dwyer 7-5 and 6-2.
The Beacons advance to the LEC Semi Finals against Bridgewater State on Thursday, May 1 at a time to be determined. With a win, they will advance to the LEC Championship against the winner of LEC No. 1 Rhode Island College vs LEC No. 4 Western Connecticut State.
