Baseball Outlasts Mitchell College for Sixth Straight Victory

NEW LONDON, CT. (March 6, 2025) – The UMass Boston baseball team (6-0) extended their win streak to six games following a 5-3 victory over Mitchell College in New London, CT, Thursday afternoon.

The Beacons used four pitchers on the day that combined for 10 total strikeouts. Graduate right-hander Max Moss (Manhattan, N.Y.) got the start on the mound and went five strong innings earning his first win of the season. Senior Thomas Kierce (Cohasset, Mass.) came on to work the eighth and ninth innings to pick up his second save of the year.

How it Happened:
  • In the top of the second inning the Beacons put two runs on the board with two outs. Junior outfielder Breon Parker (Springfield, Mass.) tripled to right field and then scored on a wild pitch. Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.) reached base via a walk and came around to score off a Bostyn Burris (Highland Village, Tex.) RBI double to the gap in right, giving UMass Boston a 2-0 lead.
  • The Mariners were able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second after senior Michael Gajda led off with a double down the right field line, and came around to score on a single by Chase Donahue.
  • Jimenez reached base to start the fifth via an error and advanced to third on a single through the right side by Burris, his second hit of the game. Jimenez would then score following a Justin Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) sacrifice fly.
  • The Mariners answered in the home half of the inning when Nick Bracale singled to score Ryan Dennis.
  • Following a scoreless sixth, Jimenez led off with a single to start the seventh and advanced to second on a ground out. With two outs and Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.) facing a 0-1 count, a passed ball allowed Jimenez to advance to third and then score when the throw to third base sailed high.
  • The Beacons tacked on one more run in the eighth. Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) reached on a one-out fielder's choice and advanced to second following a Richard Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) walk. Parker's second hit of the game would score Farnacci for the final run of the day for the Beacons.
By the Numbers:
  • Burris lead the way offensively going 3-5 and driving in a run.
  • Parker was 2-4 on the day with one RBI.
  • Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had two hits in the winning effort.
  • Jimenez was 1-3 with two walks and three runs scored.
  • With their sixth consecutive win, the Beacons tie their program record for the best start to a season, dating back to 2018.

UMass Boston will be back in action next Thursday, March 13, at 4:00 p.m., when they take on the Wheaton College Lyons in Auburndale, FL. This will kick off a stretch of six games in eight days during their annual Spring Break trip.
