Beacons Improve to 7-0 with Spring Break Opening Win over Wheaton College

AUBURNDALE, FL. (March 13, 2025) The (RV) UMass Boston baseball team (7-0) remains unbeaten to begin their 2025 campaign with a spring-break opening 11-4 victory over the Wheaton College (MA) Lyons (4-3).

Senior right-handed pitcher Ross Dexter (Milton, Mass.) pitched six innings and struck out a team-high six batters to lead the way on the mound. Sophomore Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) led all sluggers with three RBIs, coming from his leadoff double to clear a loaded basepath in the first inning.

First-year Connor Curtis (Mansfield, Mass.) and sophomore Angelo Centrone (Bethel, Conn.) closed the final three innings on the mound, and struck out two against 14 batters with just one allowed hit in the final frames.

How it Happened:
Lead-off walks to Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.), Bostyn Burris (Highland Village, Tex.), and Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) loaded the bases for Miles, who stepped into a double to clear the bases and take a three-run lead in the first inning.

Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.) singled to left field and advanced to second on an error to begin the following inning. Breon Parker (Springfield, Mass.) moved Meagher to third with another single through the left side. Jimenez drove in Meagher with an RBI single to left. Burris loaded the bases on a bunt single, and Gaer forced a walk to bring in Parker, giving the Beacons a 5-0 lead at the end of the second.

UMass Boston rallied for six runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth. A sacrifice fly out to center field from Burris brought home Meagher to begin the rally. Gaer took one for the team, adding an RBI off a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Parker. Graduate outfielder Richard Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) came in to pinch-hit for Jacob Levine (Easton, Mass.) and laced a two-run RBI single to right center to score Justin Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Jimenez. Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Meagher each walked with the bases loaded to drive in Gaer and Williams for the game's final two runs, giving the Beacons 11 total to the Lyons three at the end of the sixth.

By the Numbers:
  • Miles led the Beacons with three RBIs and a walk in four trips to the plate.
  • Gaer and Williams each followed suit with two RBIs. Gaer scored two runs and Williams went 1-1 at the dish.
  • Gaer, Jimenez, Meagher, and Parker each scored two runs to combine for eight of the Beacs' 11.
  • Meagher had a team-high two hits in three at-bats with one RBI.
UMass Boston baseball continues the spring break road swing tomorrow (Mar. 14) against #17 (d3baseball.com) Rowan University at 3:15 p.m.
