Baseball Extends Win Streak with 10-4 Victory Over Lasell

BOSTON, MA. (March 5, 2025) – The UMass Boston Baseball team (5-0) won its fifth consecutive game to open the season with a 10-4 victory over the Lasell University Lasers (2-1) on a breezy Wednesday afternoon at Monan Park.

The Beacons used four pitchers on the mound in the winning effort. Senior right-handed pitcher Dowd Ritter (Birmingham, Ala.) went the first three innings and punched out four of the 16 batters he faced. The Little East Conference's Rookie of the Week, Jonny Pagano (Attleboro, Mass.), followed Ritter for the next two innings and allowed just one run on three hits. First-year Justin Silverstein (Shelton, Conn.) and sophomore Hunter Ward (Nashua, N.H.) each pitched two innings to close the door on the Lasers. Silverstein allowed just one hit and struck out two batters picking up his first career win with UMass Boston.

How it Happened:
  • The Lasers scored one run in the second and two in the third to spring out to an early lead.
  • UMass Boston struck back in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on one hit and two errors. Graduate Richard Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) laced an RBI triple for his first of three hits in the game, bringing home Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.), who reached base after being hit by a pitch. Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.) was also hit by a pitch and later stole second to advance into scoring position. Bostyn Burris (Highland Village, Tex.) grounded out to short, driving in Williams for the second Beacons' run of the frame and advancing Jimenez to third. Justin Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) followed with a walk to put runners on the corners. The Beacons executed a successful double steal allowing Jimenez to score. Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) followed by reaching first on an error, allowing Gouveia to cross the plate.
  • The Beacons added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jimenez and Burris both reached base via a hit-by-pitch to open the home half of the inning. Gouveia followed with a single to load the bases for Gaer, who singled up the middle to drive in Jimenez and Burris. Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) singled to score Gouveia from third to end the run for the Beacons.
  • In the seventh, following a one-out double from Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.), Farnacci delivered again with a single to drive in Miles to extend the lead to 8-4.
  • In the eighth inning, Meagher led off with a double and later scored on an RBI single from Richards. Burris moved Williams into scoring position with a ground out, and Gouveia singled to score Williams for the Beacons' final run of the game.
By the Numbers:
  • Williams went 3-4 on the day with two runs scored and two RBIs.
  • Farnacci was 2-4 with two RBIs.
  • Gouveia was 2-4 with one RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.
UMass Boston will return to action on Thursday (Mar. 6) at 2:00 p.m for their first road game of the 2025 season in New London, CT, against Mitchell College.
