Beacons Silence the Wolves with a Double Shutout to Remain Unbeaten in Conference Play

DANBURY, CT (March 28, 2025) – The UMass Boston baseball team (13-6, 4-0 Little East Conference) swept the Western Connecticut State Wolves (5-9, 0-4 LEC) in their second LEC doubleheader of the season with a pair of statement shutout victories on the road, maintaining their undefeated conference record.

The Beacons' pitching staff delivered dominant performances in both games. Max Moss (Manhattan, N.Y.) and Jonny Pagano (Attleboro, Mass.) started games one and two, respectively. Moss struck out five in six innings, allowing just two hits and shutting out the Wolves in game one. Pagano followed with eight strikeouts in six innings of work, allowing only two hits and keeping the Wolves scoreless in game two. Both starters set the stage for a pair of shutouts, with the Beacons' closers finishing off the victories in strong fashion.

Logan Lawrence (Taunton, Mass.) closed game one with three shutout innings, striking out two batters in each inning to earn his first save of the season. Thomas Kierce (Cohasset, Mass.) finished game two with a flawless seventh-inning, striking out the side to secure the mercy-rule victory.

Game One:

  • Justin Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to score Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.), who had led off the inning with a triple.

  • Both teams showed strong defensive play for the next six frames, with the Beacons maintaining a slim one-run lead. Jimenez added a double in the third and a single in the sixth to lead the Beacons' offense.

  • In the seventh, Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) drove in Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.) with an RBI double, extending the Beacons' lead to two runs.

  • UMass Boston sealed the victory with three more runs in the eighth inning. Bostyn Burris (Highland Village, Tex.) scored on a wild pitch, Miles singled to drive in Gouveia, and Nick Farnacci's (Farmingdale, N.Y.) deep fly ball to left allowed Meagher to tag up and score the final run of the game.

By the Numbers:

  • Jimenez led the team with three hits, including a triple, double, and single, and one run scored. He was a homerun shy of the program's second cycle in it's history.

  • Miles and Gouveia each recorded two hits, with Miles also adding his sixth double of the season.

  • Miles, Farnacci, and Breon Parker (Springfield, Mass.) each stole one base.

  • The Beacons showed excellent plate discipline, striking out only once.

Game Two:

Pagano and Kierce combined for 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits in game two.

  • Jacob Levine (Easton, Mass.) opened the scoring in the first inning with a single that brought in Jimenez and Burris. Meagher added an RBI single to score Levine.

  • In the second, Jimenez drove in Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) with an RBI single.

  • Levine collected his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, bringing in Jimenez. Gouveia then stole second, and an overthrow by the catcher allowed Burris to score.

  • Miles added another run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch, pushing the lead to seven.

  • The Beacons capped the game with six more runs in the seventh to invoke the mercy rule. Levine drove in Burris with a double, Miles hit a three-run homer, and Jimenez drove in two more with a double to complete the scoring.

By the Numbers:

  • Jimenez led the offense with three hits, including two RBIs and two runs scored.

  • Miles also had three RBIs, including a three-run homer, extending his team-leading total to 22 RBIs on the season.

  • Jimenez, Burris, and Levine each recorded extra-base hits.

  • Miles extended his hit streak to a team-high seven games, one shy of his career best.
  • The Beacons only recorded a single strikeout in game two, once again displaying great plate discipline.
Who's Next: The Beacons will host their Autism Awareness Game next Wednesday (Apr. 2) at 3:30 p.m. against the fourth-ranked Endicott College Gulls (13-3) at Monan Park.
