Baseball Ices Spartans in 2025 LEC Opening Doubleheader

BOSTON, MA (March 22, 2025) – A 10th-inning walk-off single by rookie Nicolas Piscioniere (Shelton, Conn.) in game one, followed by a two-homer, seven-RBI performance from Jacob Levine (Easton, Mass.) in game two, capped off the Beacons' (10-4, 2-0 Little East Conference) LEC regular-season opening doubleheader from Monan Park as UMass Boston swept the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans (3-13, 0-2 LEC) in a pair of thrilling victories on Saturday afternoon.

Game One: UMB 4 – 3 VTSU Castleton (F/10)
Graduate Max Moss (Manhattan, N.Y.) started the day on the mound for UMass Boston and pitched five innings. Angelo Centrone (Bethel, Conn.), Logan Lawrence (Taunton, Mass.), and Thomas Kierce (Cohasset, Mass.) came in to relieve Moss. Lawrence threw for three innings, and Kierce pitched a shutout 10th inning, striking out two-of-three batters to earn his first victory of the season.

How it Happened:

  • A three-run home run by Spartans' senior Brandon Ramirez in the first inning gave Castleton an early lead.
  • Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.) responded in the second inning, scoring Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.) from third on a grounder to short.
  • The Beacons chipped away at the deficit with a double steal by Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Jimenez. With runners on the corners, Farnacci stole second, and Jimenez stole home on a play designed to gun down Farnacci.
  • After four scoreless frames from the Beacons and facing a one-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning, a Spartans' error at shortstop allowed Reed Burkett-Schneider (Dallas, Tex.) to reach first base. Piscioniere entered as a pinch runner for Burkett-Schneider, stole second to get into scoring position, and was brought home by Richard Williams (Georgetown, Mass.), who singled to left-center, tying the game and sending it to extras.
  • After being hit by a pitch (HBP), Jimenez stole second, advanced to third on a bunt by Farnacci, and was driven in by Piscioniere with a base hit to left field, securing the walk-off victory in the 10th inning.

By the Numbers:

  • Seven Beacons recorded hits, led by Williams with two hits in five at-bats, including the game-tying RBI. Justin Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) added a double in the seventh inning, bringing his season total to four.
  • Piscioniere went a perfect 1-1 at the plate, including scoring the game-tying run and driving in the walk-off winner, marking an unforgettable moment for the freshman.
  • Farnacci led the Beacons with three stolen bases, followed by Jimenez with two, and Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Derek Hawley (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) with one each.

Game Two: UMB 23 – 8 VTSU Castleton
The Beacons mercied the Spartans in an offensive outburst during game two. Jonny Pagano (Attleboro, Mass.) started on the mound and went 2.1 innings out of the total seven. Hunter Ward (Nashua, N.H.) threw the next 2.1 innings, and Justin Silverstein (Shelton, Conn.) and Ben Cherry (Manchester, Conn.) each pitched one inning. With the win, Ward earns his first career victory on the mound.

How it Happened:

  • UMass Boston struck for five runs in the first inning, including Jimenez's two-run RBI single, a wild pitch to score Miles, and Levine's two-run single to left-center, scoring Gaer and Jimenez.
  • Levine struck again in the second inning, hitting a grand slam to cap a six-run rally, making it 11-2 heading into the third inning.
  • In the sixth inning, the Beacons added six more runs, including two home runs. Levine led off with a solo shot to center field, followed by Burris' (Highland Village, Tex.) two-run double, his fourth of the season. A failed pickoff move allowed Burris to score, and Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.) capped the inning with a two-run homer, making it 17-6.
  • Additional RBIs from Burris and Williams set up a three-run double by Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.), his fourth of the season, putting the game out of reach. UMass Boston sealed the mercy rule victory with a 23-8 win after seven innings.

By the Numbers:

  • Six Beacons recorded two or more hits, while the team tallied 20 RBIs and batted .513 (19-37) in an offensive clinic.
  • Levine delivered a historic performance with seven RBIs, tying a 20-year-old program record held by Pat Donovan for the second-most RBIs in a single game. He went 4-4 with two home runs, seven RBIs, and three runs scored, accounting for 10 of the Beacons' 23 runs.
  • Burris also went a perfect 4-4, hitting two doubles with four RBIs and a team-high four runs scored.
  • Jimenez went 3-4 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored.
  • Gouveia was 2-4 with a double and three runs scored.
  • Six Beacons recorded extra-base hits, including two home runs from Levine, one from Meagher, and five doubles from Burris, Miles, Jimenez, and Gouveia.
  • The Beacons stole five bases, led by Gouveia and Burris with two each, followed by Williams with one.

Following a successful return to Monan Park, the Beacons will next face the Tufts University Jumbos on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in Medford, MA.
