AUBURNDALE, FL. (March 17, 2025) – Graduate Richard Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) led all Beacons with five hits in six trips to the plate, and first-year Jonny Pagano (Attleboro, Mass.) earned a debut win in his first career start, as UMass Boston (8-2) returned to the win column with a massive 17-7 victory over the Salem State Vikings (2-2).
Pagano had a strong showing in his first career start. In six innings of work, he dealt a career-high nine strikeouts to 22 batters and allowed just one run on two hits in a strong defensive showing. The Beacons used four relievers to support Pagano, with Jack Cangelosi (Williamstown, Mass.), Hunter Ward (Nashua, N.H.), Marcus Mensah (Greenville, R.I.), and Ethan Nowak (Hampton, N.H.) each coming in to help seal the deal.
How it Happened:
The Beacons struck first in the top of the second inning, adding two runs on Reed Burkett-Schneider's (Austin, Tex.) double and Nick Farnacci's (Farmingdale, N.Y.) RBI to short. Jacob Levine (Easton, Mass.) and Williams came across to score in the inning.
Following a scoreless third inning and with a one-run lead, UMass Boston rallied for six runs in the fourth on six hits. Burkett-Schneider laced a one-out single to right, scoring Williams for the second time. Ryan Slack (Derby, Conn.) contributed a two-run RBI single, scoring both Levine and Burkett-Schneider. Justin Gouveia (North Dartmouth, Mass.) ended the run with an RBI triple to right field, scoring Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) on the drive.
Gouveia added another RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Slack on the tag-up.
UMass Boston scored four runs in back-to-back innings to close out the game on a high note offensively, as the Beacons scored 17 runs for the third time this season.
By the Numbers:
- Ten Beacons recorded a hit, with UMass Boston going 17-43 at the dish as a unit with 16 RBIs. Williams led the way with five hits, followed by Slack with three hits in six trips, and Burkett-Schneider contributed two hits in four trips with two RBIs.
- Williams and Slack scored a combined seven runs, with Williams scoring a team-high four runs, followed by Slack with three. Levine and Bostyn Burris (Highland Village, Tex.) each scored twice.
- Four doubles were hit for the Beacons. Breon Parker (Springfield, Mass.), Williams, Burkett-Schneider, and Slack each swung for extra bases. Gouveia also swung for extras with his fourth-inning triple.
- UMass Boston totaled 27 putouts, led by Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.) with nine, and five total assists, led by Farnacci with two.
UMass Boston returns to action on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. against the University of Scranton for the penultimate Spring Break game. The Beacons play their final game on the road on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. against Johns Hopkins University, before returning to Boston for the Little East Conference opener on Saturday (Mar. 22).
